Do You Even Know The Difference?
What Does Your Daily Action Plan Look Like?
First, I would like to take a moment to thank Kimberly Castleberry for creating the awesome You can Do It Online Training community! One thing that I have learned over the years is that it takes a strong support system of people to create an atmosphere that generates wealth. We certainly are in a pickle if we have to “Go it alone”. I know because I have been there.
Now on to the topic at hand…
Yesterday on the community board, one of the members posed the question “How Much Time Do You Spend Blogging?”.
I found it a bit difficult to answer this question personally. I guess it would depend on what you consider “blogging” to be. For those that use their blogs as their primary website for generating business online, it certainly entails much more than throwing up a few blog posts a couple of times a week.
I think there is a big misconception about running an online business that is shared by the masses. There is a myth that it is easy, you just write posts about the things you like every once in awhile and monetize your blog. Now you are living the dream!
For most people, they realize quickly this is not going to work like this. So my question is “How bad do you want it? Do you want a business or are you just toying with a hobby?”. There is a lot of factors that contribute to a successful money making venture online. SEO, Keyword targeting, traffic generation, product development, list building etc. The list can be overwhelming for many folks.
I obviously cannot cover everything here in one post. Let’s just say there is lots to do and leave it at that!
Often times, I hear from clients things like “I have had a website for a couple of years and it never made me any money” or something similar. They always tell me how hard they worked on it, they are on the computer for 16 hours a day for months and have zero results.
I have a simple question that I ask every one of these people. On a daily basis, can you show me something that you produced? A lead? A sale? A piece of content? A product? An Offer? Can you show me SOMETHING each day for all these hours of hard work?
Buying a course, or training material is not work. Even listening to it or reading it barely counts. DOING is what DOES WORK. Applying the contents of the course is where real work begins.
I have had a few successes over the years and a few losses over the years. I know what it takes on both sides. I have “been there and done that”. If I sit down and am honest about myself the truth is surely I don’t know everything and I make a fair amount of mistakes. That is NOT the primary reason for my online failures.
I would be willing to stick my neck out and even say it has NOTHING to do with how much I know or don’t know. It has to do with the amount of ACTION and what ACTION STEPS I take on a daily basis WITH CONSISTENCY that determines my results.
Nothing more, nothing less.
How many of you have felt like you spend hours in front of the computer and get nothing accomplished at all? There is for sure a place for social media in your marketing strategy, but here is a hint…while you are chatting on Facebook, I am developing new content and distributing it online. That my friends is the difference between a business and a hobby.
It takes either a lot of time or a lot of money to be successful online. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unless you can afford to outsource a ton of work, you need to spend most of your time creating new and unique content.
To be a business owner you have to be your own employee. Each hour you have to ask yourself, if I were at a regular “JOB”(eek I know right?) would you accept your activity as being productive at your job? Would you fear looking over your shoulder and being caught by the boss screwing around doing nothing on Facebook ..or Twitter…or Youtube..or the countless other distractions online? More importantly if you were the boss, would you pay you?
Don’t be mistaken, I am not trying to be the kettle calling the pot black. I too have been guilty on numerous occasions of these “workplace” violations.
If you want a business, you have to treat it like it is your workplace. One thing that has helped me is assigning daily productivity tasks or a Daily Method Of Operation. Being my own boss, I have some flexibility with the hours and I work when I want. I just understand that if I don’t work, I don’t eat..so I do my DMO list FIRST and other optional activities after.
Before I log off each nite, I put a sticky note on my computer. It contains 3-5 things I MUST accomplish the following day. There must be a verifiable end result to the items on the list, whether its a blog post, an article, a press release, a graphic…SOMETHING I can see and put my virtual finger on for each item on the list at the end of the day.
I challenge you to do the same. I challenge you to treat your business like a business. If you want part time pay, put in part time hours being productive. If you want full time pay, well like most new business owners…its going to take more than full time!
How bad do you want it? Do this for 90 days and I can promise you, no matter how bad you think you are at any of the tasks you take on and complete…you will turn your business around in 3 months or less. I can almost guarantee it!
In the comments section, post your daily method of operation. It might reveal some things about yourself that you never considered before wondering why you are struggling or why you are not struggling. :)
