How To Change The Custom App Tab Images On Facebook

Showcase Your
Favorite Apps!

Facebook’s new Timeline layout for Brand pages brings a change to where our custom tabs display on the page.

However, beyond changing their location, this has gifted us with the ability to change their graphic to suit out needs… something that was not possible before!

Visit your Page (in Timeline format, or preview) and go to the apps drop-down

Now, hover over the image for the app that you want to change and click the “Pencil” icon on the image.

This will open a drop-down. In the drop-down, click “Edit Settings”.

This opens a popup box with a tiny link that says “Change” next to “Custom Tab Image”. Click that.

This opens another tab in your browser (or window in some browsers) and gives you the developer settings for the app.

Here you will see the current image. You can again click “Change” to replace that image with your choice of images.

Pro Tip: You can upload a JPG, GIF, or PNG file. If the image is larger than 111 x 74 pixels it will be resized to fit. Best to use those dimensions to start with for quality.

So there you go, now you can get great images that showcase the app and drive either branding or clickthrough!

Have fun!

Hi Kim, this tip is super important now that Timeline for pages is live, because now the tabs are much bigger and more in-your-face. I added the Pinterest tab for my Podcasting pins right before I published my Timeline. The default thumbnail was super ugly is stuck out like a sore thumb. I swapped it out for one of the nicer images in my podcasting collection and it looks much more attractive now. Thanks Kim!

Hi Kim, I wanted to stop by and say thanks so much for spending the afternoon with us yesterday and walking us through the Timeline changes. You’re awesome!

I shared some of my thoughts about Timeline in the post I linked to in CommentLuv. I hope you get a chance to check it out when time permits.
Thanks Kim!

Wonderful! I didn’t like some of FB’s pictures; now I can change them! Just did for one of my app pictures, and like it a whole lot better. While I really don’t like it when things keep changing, this showcasing of apps at the top may be a good things. I’m still confused by the new timeline look, though. For me it seems so much more “busy,” and that doesn’t work for me. Oh well . . .

Kim, I posted a comment here but it didn’t go through . . . I’m having trouble tonight getting comments to post! Ok — I changed one of my apps while reading your blog, and am much happier with its look : )

Hi! Thanks for good advice! I do wonder – the icon to the picture albums does not seem possible to edit. Is that right?

Reply

Kim Castleberry March 24, 2012 at 4:01 am

Morten, you are correct. Both the Photos and the Likes tab are not able to have custom graphics. And the Photos tab is “stuck” in that position but the like tab can be swapped with another into that position. Hope this helps!

It doesn’t work..! *sniffles* I get to the part where I click “Edit settings”, but then .. nada. It just goes back to my page. Do you know if there’s a way to bypass this, or do I just have to wait for FB to fix the bug?

I loved your video, by the way! :)

Hey Jeanette, sounds like you might have run into a bug. The first thing I’d do is try another browser. Sometimes a browser caching hiccup can make facebook tools act crazy. If that doesn’t work then submit a bug report at http://facebook.com/knownissues on the REPORT tab (not the wall) under business pages. That’s gotta be frustrating!

Yay! I’m glad that helped you out Jeesica! It’s not that challenging but the trick is knowing where to find the setting. You have the power!

Hi Kim-
I’d like to edit the thumbnail display for the “videos” tab but when I click on “edit video settings” I get the same box to pop up as in your screen shot except the only option visable is: “Tab: Added(remove)

I don’t have the custom tab image or custom tab name options below the first like your screen shot…did facebook decide to not allow you to change the video thumbnail just like the photos tab? Thanks for your help.

Kim Castleberry April 20, 2012 at 11:15 am

Hey Paul, great question. I need to update this post because I’ve since realized that Photos, Videos, Events and Likes (all default apps essentially) are locked. This really is for changing the image of custom apps which are apps we ourselves have added to the page. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for the help.

Do you happen to know how to change the little mini-icon for custom apps? As in, the little icon displayed next to the title. For reference, I’m using ShortStack to produce the custom apps.

Reply

Kim Castleberry July 19, 2012 at 2:30 am

JC, The mini icons are a remnant from pre-timeline. They are not adjustable within the FB platform itself and the feature will never arrive since they are being phased out. In the near future, all pages and profiles both will utilize the timeline format and the only icon options will be of the type shown here.

Hello! I have a question for you guys! I developed a fb application ( social e-commerce) and i would like to let the user able to change the icon of my app. There is nothing that i can see on fb developers explaining how it is possible. Therefore i see almost the app released on facebook providing this option ( the one that you did explane in this article)
Any suggestion???
Thank you very much!

Kim Castleberry October 28, 2012 at 2:30 am

Nicola, all fan page owners can change the icons of ALL app tabs except for the default three. You don’t have to do anything to enable this. It’s just part of the “timeline” functionality.

Hi Kim,
Are the apps the same as tabs? I’m trying to add a custom app/tab on my business page similar to other business pages like “contact me” or “what’s new”, but I’m new to this, and I can’t figure out how to add this. I keep being directed to apps that are games, or newspapers, etc., Any help at all would be much appreciated!

Thank you, I’ve learned so much already from your site, and I did join your newsletter.

Hi Kim,
How do I add a custom tab, e.g., “what’s new” ? I went to the app section under edit page, update info, then apps on the left nav pane, and I don’t see where I can add an app. Forgive me, I’m a beginner here.

Reply

Kim Castleberry November 10, 2012 at 3:23 am

Hey Cindy, you need to add an iframe app to your page. For example this one: https://www.facebook.com/appcenter/static_html_plus And then you need to put html code in there. The special rule is that all images and embedded content must be hosted on SSL. However, straight text html is just fine. We use iframe apps, either basic ones like this, or more useful ones like FanPageEngine to power custom tabs.

Hello, I have been scouring the internet trying to learn how to change the image on my ‘Notes’ tab. I have followed the guidelines here, but my edit options only allow me to remove the tab, and nothing else. Is there a way around this at all?
Thank you so much for your help…

Reply

Kim Castleberry December 3, 2012 at 2:21 am

Lesley, the apps that are default on a page do not have changeable icons. If the app (such as notes) came with the page, there is nothing you can do about it’s icon. Only custom apps can have custom images.

Kim, thanks for your tip. I’m just a music major and having a ton of trouble with something very simple that wasn’t addressed in your post. Even when I’ve sized the tab image correctly it won’t load and the “incorrect size or format” message appears. Anyone have a tip? Thanks.

I have tried to get this to work but to no avail. It is saved as the right image, and no bigger than 5mb. No matter what I do it doesnt work. Is this a glitch with FB?

Reply

Kim Castleberry April 29, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Might be Adrian, should be working as long as it’s the right size, shape and small enough. Might have hit a bug.
