Hey guys and gals, just wanted to get a memo out to all of you awesome readers!
My blogs foundation was originally based on using it to stress-test plugins, concepts, approaches, ideas and even the occasional broken theme – since I entered blogging sideways helping others with WordPress first!
Lately that has really changed (Unless you count the broken footer boxes, whoops!) because as my blog gains more traction it becomes harder and harder to risk site downtime.
However, there is going to be some new “behind the scenes” stuff that if you spot and have thoughts on let me know!
I’m not going to name what I’m working on at this time since that alters the numbers when I decide if something was a good idea… or a terrible one.
I’ve had more than one terrible idea and you have been awesome in letting me know it!
The more you can assist me with feedback, insights and constructive criticism, the better material I can create to serve you and the community.
Some of these things are to test “edgy” approaches to marketing… i.e. things that if used correctly can be very very powerful but are also very dangerous in that they are tempting to manipulate, exploit and can damage a reputation.
Why would I take that risk? Partially because I enjoy finding out how they can be used correctly… but primarily because these approaches are starting to spread rapidly through some of my communities, and I am undecided on whether to blow an alarm or give my approval. Will it bite my ass? Probably.
(And, truth be told, because of my traffic level, my blog can afford to screw up some things way more than the beginning blogs of my students and readers can. I can afford hate-mail that some can not.)
I do also have a great theme redesign coming (it will probably arrive before the new artwork that goes with it does) as part of this blogs one year anniversary Jan 1!
Also going in place is a commenting policy that you will see very soon… which is the first step in a massive cleanup intended to help me track down a Page Rank issue.
We don’t know where the Page Rank issue is stemming from, as my individual posts have no trouble ranking…. but rather than take the advice of several SEO types and remove my DoFollow and Keywordluv plugin and hurt you, my loyal readers, I’m looking for intermediate solutions.
I will also be massively cleaning up old comments that I never should have approved. Mostly those that include no name, no image (get a personal “gravatar” image for your comments here), do not actually contribute to the conversation (“great post” or “I like that!” don’t even begin to cut it), or link to places that I consider questionable. Particularly when there’s more than one of these going on. If your blog is in a foreign-to-me language and you’re afraid I might catch you with that, leave me some feedback and a translation/summary or something.
Me tracking down the page rank issue is actually mostly for you – since I have little trouble actually ranking in SEO for my posts. When this blog has a higher page rank, then the links you get here for commenting are worth a lot more SEO value. If I can track down this problem, you win, big time.
In the near future you can also expect a report on the average CTRs (click through rates) of the 125×125 banner ad testing that has been running in the sidebar for a while. I’ve been tracking numbers for a while and that should be some very useful information to you!
