How To Disable AutoPlay Video on Facebook

Recently, Facebook has given autoplay capabilities to all of the Facebook hosted videos in your newsfeed.

While this is not yet being used for ads, which are coming soon, it does however create an annoyance that some people would rather skip.

Fortunately, it’s really easy to get these videos to behave again, using a simple browser add-on that we’ve discussed many times before!

Use FBPurity To Disable AutoPlay Video on Facebook

I’ve relied on FBPurity to give me control of my settings for more than 3 years and absolutely adore it.  It’s available for desktop versions of Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari at this time. It’s the best way to fix Facebook!

In another post, I cover the basics of installing it and how it works. Find that at, introduction to FBPurity

Once you have it installed, go into the FBPurity settings, under “Video Stories” and check “Disable Autoplay”. Click Save and you’re done!

FBPurity Settings

Check “Disable Autoplay”

It’s as simple as that!

When the video crosses through your stream, the little playhead in the center will spin for a second and then stop… and there will be no playing.

This is just one of the many powerful things you can do with FBPurity so be sure to check it out!

What do you think about the autoplay/preview video feature on Facebook?

Hi,

Thanks for letting us know such a wonderful feature about Facebook. Really, these autoplay features are very annoying, especially when concentrating on a specific work and suddenly someone you hear a voice on your speaker. :)

Great tutorial! Useful info. to have. I had noticed that a lot of facebook videos started playing automatically as I scrolled past recently. Is that something new?

Thank you so much for giving us a way to turn off Facebook autoplay, Kim. I always have a lot of tabs open and it is a real nuisance when more than one video starts playing at once. It is one of my pet hates especially if I have the volume turned up after watching a video with faint sound.

Hi Kim,

I’m already using FBPurity, but wasn’t aware that it could help to disable autoplay videos. BTW in my FB account autoplay is not activated but you already mentioned the solution.

That app will be handy all the time, not just for FaceBook videos – we shouldn’t be forced to listen to videos which are on auto-play. Thanks Kim.

Facebook anyways does not auto-play videos, does it? I am not seeing the auto-play as yet.

You may not have the feature yet Anchit, but you will in the near future on desktop. It only applies to videos uploaded to FB and not to YT videos. It’s part of FB’s prep for auto-play video ads in the near future.

This use for FB Purity will be especially helpful. There’s nothing worse than to have a series of tabs open all at the same time and have to hunt down the one that’s playing a video!

Hey Kim,

This seems like a really cool product. I think the “hide” function would be nice to be able to use. I have got people on facebook that I don’t care to see their updates (why i am still friends with them im not sure) and this would be a great way to ignore it and take it out. Mainly the people that over post and give every detail about their life about every 10 minutes.

Hi Kim,

Thank goodness you wrote this post and told us about FBPurity! It is driving me crazy with those auto-play videos.
I can’t imagine when people will do this to pitch their products! This is a life saver because some people are using this all the time and I was about to block them.
Now I have the solution to the problem.
Thanks!

Kim,
I don’t know where I’ve been but I have not noticed the autoplay videos yet. However, I am grateful that you have told me about this plugin. I saved the link to your previous blog that explains how to install it and I will do that soon. Thanks again for keeping us abreast of latest online changes and issues.

Warmly,

Dr. Erica

This is one of the silliest things I’ve seen Facebook do yet… Google+ IS the next big thing.. and stuff like this just makes that happen faster.
