Now A Fully DoFollow Enabled Blog!
Hot! Fresh! … and now with more link-love for you!
What does DoFollow mean?
A few weeks back I wrote a post titled “What is DoFollow? What is NoFollow? What’s The Difference?” that outlined why this is important for you as a reader!
Super short summary….
Backlinks to your own blog, from a DoFollow enabled blog such as this one are worth approximately 10 times the SEO value as a link from a NoFollow blog. WordPress is by default nofollow on comment links. (Your blog is nofollow unless you’ve enabled the DoFollow plugin.)
Both the name-url link and the commentluv link of this blog are now DoFollow, so that is 2 DoFollow links just for commenting!
Plus, if you utilize the keywordluv that I have enabled, to use “name@keywords” in the name-url field, your name-url link will have the correct anchor text, getting you EVEN MORE SEO LOVE! Confused by what keywordluv is and how to make the most of it? Check out my post on keywordluv here.
You can greatly maximize your SEO return for commenting by tracking down and commenting regularly on DoFollow, Commentluv & Keywordluv enabled blogs! (This is why many SEO tools such as Market Samurai make it easy to locate DoFollow blogs.)
What Took So Long To Go (Fully) DoFollow?
By default, WordPress comments have a “nofollow” tag built into them. When I was just getting started, not only did I not know what this meant – but I didn’t know how to change it (or if I even should!)
While DoFollow links are a sweet gift to the commenters, there is a lot of fear and hype associated with turning a blog DoFollow.
One of the pieces of hype, that is just that, is that it will substantially negatively affect the blogs page-rank (PR) with Google. Sire, who’s blog averages a PR4 (which is very nice!), has a post talking about how DoFollow does not leech page-rank. If his post was not enough, I’ve also been doing some reading lately on how Google is now officially down-playing the impact that PR has in their search ranking mechanism. In fact, there’s a chance if you’re a new blogger this is the first time you’ve even HEARD of PR because emphasis has been taken slightly off of it. (It does still matter for understanding quality of backlinks however, so we can’t ignore it.)
The second piece of hype has a larger grain of truth in it. Enabling DoFollow leads to substantially more spam. This occurs for the same reason that YOU should chose to comment on a DoFollow blog. Because the links are worth so much more, DoFollow blogs get listed in DoFollow Directories and both real bloggers and real spammers alike will hunt them out!
Dealing with DoFollow Spam!
Akismet does a pretty darn good job keeping most of them flagged as spam that should be, and out of the pending area. Akismet actually works really well.. until your readers get smart, like my readers (that’s you!) did! Once my readers began to understand that deep-links to their blog (that’s a link directly to a page or post) had more SEO value than a link to their homepage, they began using that in the url field. That’s a SMART move, but because its used by spammers too, Akismet began sending ALL deep-linked comments to spam. So suddenly I was having to dig friends posts out of over 100 spam posts per day! (I’m fortunate that most of the Syndication Alliance community have gravatars enabled so it wasn’t too terrible, but it still was a lot of work – and – I tended to miss some occasionally.) Me missing real comments was simply not acceptable to me. You go through the effort to leave a high quality, thought provoking, sharing comment… I believe I owe you my best to make sure it gets posted!
I also use the Bad Behavior plugin, which blocks the IP address of known spammers and can also be a good way to minimize spam. I never saw this plugin have a serious impact but its highly rated and though of in the industry and I suspect I was just getting so much volume that it was hard to notice its impact. Nice little light weight plugin I will probably keep it.
While I tried very hard to keep up with the spam influx and to sort through the spam every single day to find your posts… it was making my life as a blogger very tedious and boring. There had to be a better way, to help both of us.
That’s when I discovered the simple little block-spam-by-math plugin. It initially had some coding issues that I hired my friend @denharsh from ShoutMeLoud to put his awesome team of wordpress coders to work fixing. They got it working correctly in no time flat.
I must say I’m absolutely in love with the plugin for SUBSTANTIALLY reducing the spam load and ensuring I can find your posts even if they end up in the akismet spam box.In the several weeks since I have put it in place, I’ve had a grand total of FIVE pieces of (real) spam. That is down from over 100 pieces per day! (The plugin blocks most but not all automated (bot) spammers, but some spam is generated by hand in the equivalent of sweat shops, sadly.) To learn more about the block-spam-by-math plugin and to get our updated copy check out my post on that topic!
I was using Lucy’s Linky Love, to make my blog partial DoFollow (makes the name-url field DoFollow after the same person has posted 3 approved comments). However, it was unable to affect the commentluv link (which remained NoFollow). I put it in place when I enabled KeywordLuv originally, hoping that it would help mitigate the spamming issue. It’s a great plugin to enable a partial DoFollow state. Effective today, I have replaced it with DoFollow by Semiologic. (This one is in the the plugin search, just check the creator name.) Sire is using the DoFollow by Kimmo that also works well, but is not in the plugin search.
Summary
At this point, there is absolutely no reason for me to NOT go fully DoFollow unless I was just in a mood to be a jerk! That’s pretty much how I look at it.
When we talk about leading with value, when we talk about giving to our community, when we talk about paying-it-forward … then this becomes just as much of a no-brainer as does using commentluv. (Don’t get me started on those that are still forcing me to log into Disqus & IntenseDebate and sometimes not even get a commenluv link, thinking I’m going to be happy commenting on their blogs.)
How can you get the same effect? Just grab the block-spam-by-math plugin (be sure to get my updated copy), Keywordluv and the DoFollow plugin and be sure Akismet is enabled and you’re good to go! If you upgrade your blog to full DoFollow, Commentluv and Keywordluv enabled be sure to let me know so I can come visit! {Better yet, comment over here, so I can get you listed!: Listing of Community DoFollow, Commentluv, KeywordLov blogs!}
DoFollow? NoFollow? What’s your thoughts? How does knowing if a blog is a DoFollow blog affect your decision to comment? Have you converted YOUR blog to DoFollow yet? Why or why not? As always, I appreciate all your thoughts, comments and syndication of this article!

I’m so glad that you liked the work and added a piece of note for me

Meanwhile yes Do-follow increase spam comments but at the same time it helps a lot in increasing comment and interaction….
Wish you luck and I believe now you going to reply directly from dashboard

Indeed! This is me happily replying from the dashboard without the error messages! I also gave you credit on the post I did specifically about that plugin. I think I’m going to have you do one more adaptation to it, to try to move it above the submit button, since I still cant seem to, but all in all I’m thrilled
Sure do let me know and I will make those changes.
.-= Harsh Agrawal´s last blog ..Find And Use SEO Secrets of Other Websites =-.
Definitely will do! I’ll probably send it over with some of the other quotes I’ve been too busy to get back to you on! You rock!
Kimberly I am going to try it. I don’t understand the technical bits but I do know that if it helps other people I am in. Will let you know of the outcomes once I have it in place. Hope the maths questions don’t get too hard.
Kimberly
How do I know if I am a do follow now? I should be is there a way of testing it can you let me know.
Belinda
I went to your most recent post. I found Vals comment. Highlighted over first the name link (and second the commentluv link seperately). In firefox once you’ve highlighted them you can right click “view source”. You’ll see the long link code but no sign of the word nofollow. You are no fully DoFollow. Congratulations and nice work!
Kimberly,
You are so brilliant and such a genius! I feel so honored to know you. I have to be honest and say I must re-read this article again and go really slow because I understood about half of it.
The spam is a concern and thank you for helping my with that a while ago, however, to assist everyone else is a win-win situation we all want to do.
Thank you so much for always being so “on top” of all of the technicalities of social media! I love your passion for the details and for helping all of us who are not as “inclined” to it.
Much love & gratitude,
Kellie

Kellie, most of the post is about the “why” aspect. The how is just those three simple plugins. Neither have any settings. They’re super-fast to get set up! If you have any trouble with them, give me a shout here or on skype and I’ll walk you through!
Thank you so much! I didn’t realize the WP default was NoFollow…
thanks to you I’ve now added the plugin and happily climb aboard the DoFollow train.

Thanks for the wonderful tips!

Awesome! I stopped by your blog and left you a comment! Nice work and its working correctly! I didn’t see any twitter/FB/social book marking utilities however. Do you not make use of those for links and syndication?
Kimberly
Thanks so much Kimberly…
Actually, I DO have the social book marking utilities available right under the post and above the comment box… and I’ve been wondering if they might be too small for people to catch them.
Since you didn’t see them, I’ll bet I should find some bigger and brighter icons. Any recommendations?

.-= Mary K Weinhagen´s last blog ..Help Wanted: MOM =-.
I used to suggest individual share buttons, but the “Digg Digg” plugin integrates up to I think its 12 different ones now. That’s what I’m running at the top of my post. You can easily select which ones to use, how to position them, big or small icon form, and a bunch of other stuff. The plugin is really nice and stable. (They did JUST – as in 2 days ago – add the Ajax float, so that section isn’t entirely working yet for a few people.) All in all however its one of my absolute “must have” plugins. Just install -> activate -> Settings -> Go through the settings and select which buttons and which locations -> be sure to fill in your twitter ID in #5, and your good to go
Let me know when you have those in place and I’ll come back and hit those, and Onlywire to do some major bookmarking for your page for you. We use all of these syndication tools as part of our “syndication alliance” or “tribe syndication” method to increase exposure and help each other out. You’ll see more on my blog about SA shortly!

Hey Kim, good to see you got it all together. Thanks so much for linking to me too, I always appreciate a bit of luvin
I know how some people refuse to go dofollow, and while that’s a personal choice I’ve always found it beneficial to reward people when they take time out of their day to read my post and then to leave a comment. Sure they may be doing it to get some link juice but what of it, they scratch my back and I’ll scratch theirs. Speaking of scratching, a little lower please

I’ve learned a lot from what your doing with your blog. You’ve got a number of things in place that keep the community coming back regardless of your advertising, etc. Thats powerful. You’ve really built a nice following. You hold the bar high!

I think i got my head around that. I have never really known which one to tick in my Thesis theme and you have totally cleared that up – fully!
Thanks for the top tips and handy hints, we are ever evolving with all this new knowledge. Thanks heaps!
Glad you got it sorted out Matt. If you decide to go DoFollow/KeywordLuv be sure to let me know so I can include you in the list I’m building!

Kimberly…. YOU ROCK!
I tried installing DIGG DIGG and received a FAIL message
I’m wondering if it’s because they’ve recently updated it?
I guess for now I’ll continue to use the sociable plugin for social bookmarking but I’ll go see if I have an option of larger icons or something.
Thank you so much!!!

Mary, I’d wait a few days and try Digg Digg again. If in 3 or 4 days you still have trouble, I’d be happy to take a look at it. I’m curious what may be up with it if its not the most recent changes. Keep me posted

Kimberly,
You always bring such awesome content. I have been considering “do-follow” for a while now. This post has helped me make my mind up. So glad to know you my friend!
Krista
Let me know when you add it, we have the new list as well! Its great for getting SEO credit when your short on time! (And really… who isnt??)
Dofollow has absolutely no effect on PR or search engine traffic @ all. My blog in particular has gradually risen to a PR 3 despite having dofollow activated.
The only problem is the spam. It’s simply frustrating but with a nice comment policy in place, one will do just fine

Udegbunam Chukwudi invites you to read…How To Sell A Blogger Blogspot Blog Without Hassles
Bloggers and true commenters rarely care for if the comment links are dofollow or not. Did you check when you were commenting on my blog? Please execuse me to put a few points in oppose to what you have discussed here, (http://seommotips.com/seo/why-not-to-make-your-blog-dofollow/)
1. Google and some others devised nofollow attribute in 2005 to fight against spams (better say anti-natural flow of link juice) so as to keep the search results closer to what its users are searching. Google might make a change on algorithm to ranking soon for the same purpose because after these 15 years nofollow is really not working much.
2. This is a great misconception that nofollow links do not contribute to seo. No it is not like that. Check your backlinks list.
3. If everything were as you said, when all the links in a blog are nofollow free, you’ve already diluted the link juice and what remains to share? It was better to credit your top commenters or the like with a review post where a handful of links are dofollow. This would be of real value.
4. When your link juice is so thin, it would be of any interest to advertisers and you’ll remain with diminished monetizing possibility.
5. Ethics. We the bloggers and webmasters were expected to help the crawlers and bots direct where to follow and where it should not. We are using the tool and did not do our duty. Yes, we can argue – it’s Google’s problem, let it solve himself – yes he’ll.
So, I used commentLuv and this is sufficient for comment authors to pass authority to their blog post and other links NOFOLLOW. Every time when I write a review of top commenters in my blog, I guess I’ve offered due.
I accept the views on opposite and would be great to educate me if I’m wrong anywhere. Please

You raise some valid points and I’m looking forward to sharing thoughts with you.
Regarding the lower backlink love that an advertiser may get if they were putting an add on my blog purely for the backlink, you are correct that I have likely diluted things far enough they would not get much. The question there is actually whether thats important to me. For someone willfully taking paid advertising, it might be. For me growing a self-branded, social media centric site, where I don’t take paid advertising (although I do occasionally do banner swaps with friends) this simply isnt an issue. A person cant currently pay me enough to advertise here and destroy the ethics I’ve built around this site unless I would otherwise be an affiliate for them anyways based on my own review of their product.
The strongest link juice is always held by the homepage when it is the page on the site with the most inbound links. That is why I run top commentator on the home page (again in do-follow). There I reward those that take care of me with something I can give them. I strongly protect what is able to display on my home page, and use that as a position to reward visitors from.
Also, while I currently don’t have it running, I USUALLY use super comments by Vladmir Prelovic (sp?) which splits comments off into their own pages so that there is less links per page. This helps the commenter with link love but also helps me minimize dilution of my keyword density on comment-rich posts.
There are quite a few PR4 and PR5 DoFollow blogs that are both commentluv and keywordluv enabled for me to believe that dofollow drains all the juice. I think thats an idea based on some things in the calculations we don’t really understand. If it was true, then those sites could not have that high PR while still having a high number of commenters.
Ethics… yes ethics. We as bloggers have an unspoken oath to look out for our fellow bloggers, who aren’t spamming, who arent abusing the system, who are just sharing comments and wanting to bring in some traffic. While my numbers actually increased after the recent google change, generally speaking SEO makes up about 40% of my inbound traffic – my loyalties lay with my readers, not with google regardless of how bad losing that SEO traffic would sting. Yes we have ethical obligations not to encourage spamming, not to link to bad neighborhoods (which actually I often strongly disagree with google on what is “bad” since I’ve seen many adult health sites flagged)
I’m fairly certain I haven’t said anywhere that nofollow has no seo value… just that it simply has substantially less. Yes, it certainly counts as a backlink in the numbers.
Now you may hate me for answering this honestly but I did check your site while I was there but mostly for curiosity. I make a point to regularly frequent and comment on DF/CL/KL enabled sites and try to make note of them.
However.. the lack of dofollow does not stop me from following the link of someone (like you) that was generous enough to stop on my blog and leave me a comment. SEO aside, we both know, as bloggers, that comments are the lifeblood of a blog. I do not manage to comment back on EVERY comment but I do when I can. Its another way of saying thank you.
At the end of the day, Suresh – you and I both have our educated opinions – and neither of us really knows what the google algorithm says, or what the next changes will bring. I appreciate you sharing your insights!

The nofollow movement seems to be gainign so much ground recently. Its a good thing that so many bloggers who have used it in the past are fighting back so we can go back to predominantly dofollow.

According to me Do Follow effects the Page-rank,If you have given Outbound link from your site which is non related to your site, in that case Page rank will be effected. But most of the time it will not effect your site.
