Now You Can AutoFill The Comment Form
of WordPress Blogs Using The
“Easy Comment” Firefox Addon!
Now you can fill out the details section of any standard comment form on WordPress with the simple
click of the Easy Comment Button!
When I’m in the mood to comment on a bunch of blogs, the LAST thing I want to be doing is re-typing the same information, over and over!
I HATE doing repetitive stuff over and over if there is ANY alternative that saves me time, energy or monotony!
So when I came across this awesome free add-on for Firefox I had to show you my cool new toy!
The add-on is called “easyComment” and is available in the Firefox add-on repository here (English version).
(I suppose I should point out that you’re going to need the Firefox browser for this… and if you don’t have it go get it! Seriously!)
How To Setup & Use the Easy Comment Firefox Addon!
1. Download/Install Easy Comment From Here. (Will need to restart Firefox.)
2. Down in the bottom right corner of your browser’s footer toolbar (aka “status bar), you will now see the word “easyComment”
(unless you named it something else in step 3). This is where the add-on actually runs.
3. RIGHT click the easyComment (the word itself) and you will get a menu that looks like this.
4. In this right-click popup menu for easyComment, select Advanced -> Options.
Once Options is opened, you can set the name that easyComment will display with in your footer bar AND the hotkey. Now, I cant get the hotkey working, I believe its conflicting with another of my plugins but it does the same as clicking the title in the footer will after we set it up. I don’t really miss it, the addon is still gold without it. (Hit the return to main window button when you’re happy with the settings.)

5. Again open the right-click menu by right clicking on the Easy Comment link in the browsers lower bar.
This time, you want to open Easy Comment’s “Manage Profiles…”
Here you want to fill in your Name, website url and email as you use it when you comment on blogs. (Leave the Comment box empty & When finished click the “Return to Main Menu” button).

7. Now go visit a blog!
(If you were already on one you MAY need to refresh the page for the new settings to work). Once your in the comment section of the post you want to comment on, simply click (left-click) on the word ‘easyComment’ in your browsers footer bar, and “magically” your details will fill themselves in thanks to Easy Comment.
If it works for you, the hot-key combination we set earlier would likely be faster/easier than that too!

That’s all there is to it! This little add-on rocks!

This a really slick plugin but i’m wondering if it would conflict with plugins like LastPass and RoboForm.

Josiah while I cant say for sure I think that RoboForm has a similar feature built in so I’m doubtful there would be a need.

PS: Good to see you again!
OK, how did I not know about this before!!!
I love Firefox and I am addicted to its add-ons
Thanks for the tip, I do a lot of commenting and it is really frustrating to type my name, e-mail and website all over again. Some blogs already have my data when I come to a post (like yours, I am only typing the comment) but I don’t know if it is some setting on the blog or the browser.
So now, no matter what blog I wanna comment on, all I will need to do is write the comment itself.
P.S. I hope people won’t fill in the comments field, it leads to problems, lol, I know from my blog’s comments (spam).
Thanks Kim!

Good find, Kimberly! I know it is, even though I don’t use it. the reason is that my favorite addon is the RoboForm toolbar. You’re right, it saves a ton of time by auto-filling the common form fields.
One place where RoboForm gets tripped up is on blogs that ask for your Twitter ID. You know that teeny-weeny blue box you have at the bottom? If I’m not paying attention, RoboForm puts my blog address in there. Hopefully, you won’t have that problem. (You shouldn’t since that is separate from the comment form, right?)
Interestingly, it didn’t mess with your blue box this time. Yay!
Cheers,
Mitch

Nice tool, I have been using chrome since it came out. It’s hard for me to switch but this tool may be worthing firing it up for commenting.

Hi Kim!
As a public service to your readers, I installed easyComment and ran it along with my RoboForm toolbar. (I used a different website and email address.)
There are no problems! When I left-clicked “easyComment” as you instructed, the form was filled in ! I also added the salutation, header and closing to the profile. Normally, we would want to leave that blank, except for the closing.
So, use one, use both, be happy! Why use both? Sometimes, RoboForm can’t seem to find the fields. I never had this happen with the default WordPress commenting system, but it has happened on a weird commenting system (IntenseDebate comes to mind but I’m not pointing fingers).
So, to answer Josiah’s concerns, there don’t seem to be any conflicts. Nor should there be, since both tools are passive, requiring you to activate them before they’ll fill in the forms.
Incidental to this test, I noticed that, when I come to your site, all the form fields on the page are pre-filled with my info. I must look into this. (Firefox auto-fill? is there such a thing? Have you seen this behavior in Firefox on other blogs?)
The cool thing, which IS relevant to the test, is that easyComment simply overwrote the pre-filled information with the profile contents!
Cheers,
Mitch
Hi Kim,
You are right doing repetitive task is really boring, especially when you have to do it and a relatively small time frame.
I actually use something similar except the fact that it isn’t especially made for comments, it has a more general purpose of filling forms(for any kind of forms or such). All I have to do is use a regex (regular expression that matches the forms input html forms name) type in the value and it assigns a shortcut key automatically for that profile.
Great job again Kim, for finding this nifty plugin!

Hi Kim,
once again another useful tip!
Thank you so much for your very clear instructions.
I am always glad when on repeat visits it is all filled in for me. Now that can happen even on new blogs, thanks to you.
Have a prosperous 2011!
Love and Joy

Nice plugin Kimberly. Never considered the time saving that was possible when it came to commenting. Works simple to. Thanks! Now gotta go and see if the shortcut works!

Hey Brendan, thanks for dropping in and leaving a comment. Yeah it’s one of those little things that makes ya go “well why didn’t I think of that” when you see it! Be sure to let me know if you get the shortcut working please?
Kimberly

Hey Kim, my information is usually already pre-populated on blogs I’ve commented on before (like yours) which does make it a lot easier and faster to comment. For new blogs I run across, I will definitely keep that plugin in mind however. Thanks.
