Save The Friendship
While Preserving Your Sanity
Have you ever wanted to scream “Stop The Insanity!!!”???
We all “get” the fact that Facebook is one big social party… but sometimes we wish we didn’t always have to stand right next to the guy rambling on about something we don’t particularly care about.
With the political season in full force in the USA, politics have become one of the most frequent… and frequently hated… topics on Facebook.
Some people are feeling so overwhelmed by it that they are ignoring or even contemplating leaving Facebook until it’s over!
Fortunately, you can put a muzzle on politically chatty friends… (without them knowing about it)
(Sung to the tune of Abu Dhabi, via Garfield the Cat)…
“Acquaintance List” it’s far away….. “Acquaintance List” it’s where you’ll stay… “Aquaintance list”, it’s the perfect place for any friend who’s annoying me…. (with political nonsense).
While the browser addon FBPurity.com remains my strong first line of (awesome) defense at minimizing topics in the newsfeed that I don’t want to hear about… some friends are really just too caught up in things at the moment.
There really is a way to save the friendship! (And it doesn’t… quite… involve ductaping their mouth shut!)
Although, you know, the ducttape might be more amusing
Once an individual is in the Acquaintance list, the main newsfeed will display a very limited portion (only the high EdgeRank and life events stuff) from that individual.
Want to find your acquaintance list and/or view everything that was posted?
Just click on the big “Facebook” logo in your upper left to get Home… and then scroll down the left sidebar until you see “Friends” and click on the word Friends.
Once you click on Acquaintances in the options… you will be taken to the list-view of your acquaintances.
This page will show you a pure, unfiltered view of what your Acquaintances are sharing as well as suggest individuals that you do not interact with often who may belong on the list.
In the upper right hand corner of this list-view page, you will see “Who is In This List” which has a “See All” Link. This allows you to easily see, add and remove people.
The goal here, is to add people to the Acquaintance list, until after we get through the election cycle…. then return here and remove them from the list when you are ready to hear from them more regularly.
Because the individual is unaware of whether you are even seeing their content at all, have them on a list, or are just ignoring their content…. your friendship is preserved!
It’s like a mute button good through November (elections)… or longer!
I believe that everyone is entitled to their right to free speech… but that I am entitled to my right to choose what content I will and won’t listen to my friends ramble on about! This is not to say that I haven’t posted a few political commentaries of my own of course!
How are you handling all of the political silliness on Facebook? Has it affected you?
