Put In Your Friends
Yesterday, I shared a tip about how to discard some of the group content that your friends publish into your news feed.
Gary asked a great question, in the #YCDI group, about whether we can control what our friends see in the first place…
The answer is “not exactly”…
The control you have comes from paying attention to the TYPE of group you are in. (Which is at the top of the About box in each group.)
SECRET groups publish nothing ANYWHERE (and they’re so secret that if you leave you can’t ever rejoin even if you have a link).
CLOSED groups are visible in your group list and sometimes visible upon joining… but don’t publish your postings out to your news feed.
OPEN groups (like this one) – function the same way a FB page does – and any item you publish on the wall here may be seen by your friends in your news feed. (And if you comment on something, there is a low chance that it may crop up in the news feed too although this isn’t real common.)
So, by understanding the group types, you understand what WILL and WON’T be seen by your friends.
This is actually more control than you have over Facebook pages which do not have any visibility types and are all Public which is their version of “Open”.
Knowledge is Power!
