A #FollowFriday Tool That Rocks!
The weekly #FollowFriday event on Twitter is a chance to show off and showcase those that have taken care of you!
Setting up the #FollowFriday tweets can often be tedious due to having to remember and type so much over and over. Not what I call fun!
Fortunately, Follow Friday Helper (@ffhelper) has been coming to my rescue for several weeks now and I frankly love it!
FFH makes it dead-easy to recommend users based on your RTs, mentions, favorites and recommendations. Give it a try!
Follow Friday Helper is a simple web-based free application that helps you do your weekly recommendations and thank the people you interact with the most in a matter of a few clicks.
Besides just #FollowFriday, this tool is awesome for a number of other @name lists such as #ff #ThankYou #TY #Gratitude #Top #FollowSaturday #FollowSunday #FollowMonday #FollowTuesday #FollowWednesday #FollowThursday #FollowNow #FollowEveryDay #MustFollow and #FollowerOfTheDay.
It’s a super fast way to make the usual@name list tweets take all of maybe 20 seconds to put together! For example:
#FollowFriday @jacquelinegates @dragonblogger @growmap @seommotips @kelliehosaka @daveanddawncook @keepupweb @basicblogtips
However, as we’ll see shortly it’s also useful for saving time on putting together useful/appropriate #FollowFriday recommendations rather than just the link lists that have sadly become the norm.
First… Go to Follow Friday Helper and login to connect by secure OAuth…
Once you’re connected you’ll be presented with a screen like this…
This looks like a standard tweet box, but its important to note that this box is “fixed” and anything put into it will not be lost as we navigate through the pages of those that have mentioned us that is right below it.
We can also see “Tweet Type” where we can easily click on the tweet type we want to use (and it will remain in use for this session until we click on another, handy for when you need to do a LOT!
Below the tweet box, scrolling downward you will see pages of all of those that have mentioned in you in last week, sorted by frequency by default. I’ve circled some things that are clickable….
If I click the users name, it will automagically put their name into the tweet above.
If I click “# tweets” it will show me WHAT they tweeted (useful to rule out one that might have been a spambot)…..
The recommend link opens a single panel recommendation tweet box to do #FollowFriday recommendations the “correct” way, mentioning only a single user and writing about what makes them special and what their specialties are that might interest others.
And a green check-mark appears to the right of recommendation, to show me that I have in some form or another recommended that user already this week. Letting me keep track of my place if I forget where I was!
I actually have (generally) gotten away from doing my #FollowFridays ON Fridays due to the amount of stream flood that basically just gets them ignored. I find they have more impact on any other day of the week.
While they are no longer very effective and mostly just serve to clutter up the stream, a @name link list like I showed above can be a quick way to give a shoutout to people who have mentioned you during the week. (Particularly those that have RTd real content rather than just quotes.)
It’s HIGHLY preferred, far more rewarding and far more effective to use the Single Recommend dialog/method, where you mention only one individual and tell about what makes them awesome, in terms of helping them, getting followers for them, and also showing that you understand social media above and beyond the “lets make stream spam” level.
I personally don’t use single recommendations as much as I SHOULD but I do my best to particularly when someone has been incredibly helpful or I want to scratch someone’s back.
Sometimes I will reply to something they said/did with my graciousness, their name, and a #FF tag trailing it to show my followers how much I think of this person even if its not a Friday!
The Follow Friday Helper app is a great way to make quick work of EITHER type of recommendation AND because it sorts by those that have mentioned me the most, I’m certain never to miss anyone important!
It seems as the world moves faster and technology keeps us on our toes that it becomes harder and harder to remember each person we engage with and yet more and more important not to forget to mention them!
What great under promoted twitter apps can’t YOU live without? Give me a shoutout in the comment box below and tell me which apps your loving. And, if you’ve used Follow Friday Helper just what you thought of it. Look forward to talking with you!
Thanks in advance for all the tweets, facebook shares, likes, diggs, stumbles … and #FollowFriday recommendations!
Here’s To Your Success,
