Guest Post by Kyle Nelson.
Recently on the YCDI Facebook Group there was a lively discussion on how often a blog should be updated with a new article. Now this is an age old question for bloggers and we are all constantly asking “How often should I be updating my blog?”
Quite frankly this question may never be solved but we can take a good guess on how often search engines such as Google would like to see you do and the reason why you need to be posting more than once a month.
You will find many bloggers say you should post a minimum of once a day if not several posts a day. Others will say that all you need to do is post a few articles a week and the selected few say one a month is just fine. Truth is you can write articles and post blogs as much as your heart desires and you still may never hit that 1 million readers you are after. Reason being is if you are not getting exposure those articles will not rank in the search engines and will not have organic natural backlinks.
Let me explain:
As a new blogger you do not have an established name yet in the industry you are after. You are not receiving any exposure and you are allocating valuable time and effort in the wrong area. Now I am not saying not to blog often but daily is definitely not necessary until you have establish your brand. Instead allocate that time to getting more exposure. Your goal should be to have your name and brand on every website that has anything to do with your specific niche.
Whether you are commenting on other blogs, placing ads through ad networks, becoming involved in forums, writing guest posts, inviting others to interview you, getting mentioned in press, the list goes on. Through exposure you can balance your article posting to your specific situation. Every blog and website is different. Every audience reacts differently but we all know that they return to your blog because they fall in love with your voice and trust you as an authority in your niche.
Other things to consider are the nature of your blog. If you are blogging on current trends in an industry that is always changing and altering then it may be necessary to blog more than let’s say a website based on personal development where the niche is a common niche that comes from inside sources (the author) rather than outside sources (the news).
You may also want to consider who your target is. If you are a media/news outlet your audience will be waiting for your next post. Your audience is always stopping by your blog to see if you have posted the next news piece. Now you may think I am suggesting that I am saying “only blog when you have something to say”. That isn’t exactly my view but you should be only delivering quality content that you know your current audience will appreciate and starts up some conversation.
The main point I am trying to get across is regardless of what your goals are with your blog you MUST commit to a posting schedule. Developing a posting schedule will help the search engines find you and help retain repeat visitors. I would recommend to setting a goal to what you know you can commit to with balancing common marketing practices to get some exposure. Try to get into the habit of a post schedule and hopefully it will become natural.
What do you think is the right frequency for a biz blogger? Lets jump in and share thoughts in the comments below! What posting schedule do YOU use?
