OK, I have to admit, the YouTube domination will be up to you, but this thing can sure help you get out there!
In this post, there are no affiliate links. The tool is free. The PRO version is very, very cheap. But hold your horses, let me at least tell you a word or two about it.
I am not much into videos, yet… They are on my to-do list, but I just feel like I need a lot of time and focus to do them.
But I am always on the lookout for awesome products, because you never know when they might come in handy.
Well, there was this time when Ileane made some tutorial videos and I was interested in what software did she use. She was kind enough to recommend two products (both free) and I gave one a shot.
I love Screencast-o-Matic! (not an affiliate link)
What is Screencast-o-Matic
“Screencast-O-Matic is the original online screen recorder for one-click recording from your browser on Windows, Mac, or Linux with no install for free!”
Basically, you can make videos out of your browser screens. All it takes is one click of a button! It is very simple to use and requires no installation.
My first encounter with this recorder
At first, I made a short tutorial video for one of my posts with it, and the only thing I didn’t like was a watermark/logo in the bottom left corner. But everything else was great.
It was easy to use, easy to save on your computer or upload it directly to YouTube.
I wanted more
The logo bugged me cause I didn’t want it in my videos. I was thinking if I should pay for the PRO version and was thinking and thinking…and after thinking I went to see how much it actually costs (lol, I should have checked before)…
Sit down or hold on to something… $9 a year!!!
Let me get more serious with the review
The advantages of the PRO version (stated on the site) are:
- no logo on the video
- 1 hr recording time
- launching SOM outside of the browser
- editing tools – they are in BETA but I tried them and everything worked
First, I have to say, for the price, this is a perfect tool for all tutorials you want to make for your blog. You can make videos out of your computer screen (not just browser), there is the zoom in feature, the mouse tracker, everything you will probably need.
I like the audio as well, and the only thing I use is a plain set of headphones with microphone I usually use to Skype.
After recording the video, you can edit it with Screencast-o-Matic tools (in PRO version). Here are the screenshots you will get after you have finished the recording. On the left is the first option and after you click on “Edit” you will get the options on the right.
Although it says BETA, I tried most of the editing tools and they worked perfectly for me.
When you are done editing, you can choose the size of the video (the pixel width and height) and save it or upload it. Uploading directly to YouTube is a simple but very cool feature. With all the editing tools, that is easy to do.
Before I got the PRO version, I had to save it on my computer to edit it and then upload.
What I like about Screencast-o-Matic
I know there are some awesome video tools out there that are worth buying. I know Camtasia and Final Cut Express are great. But, big percentage of my readers are beginners and we all know how hard (and expensive) it is to start all this.
So here is why I think you should start using this cool tool:
as a free service
- because it is easy to use it, it takes one button to start recording
- you can create 15 minute videos which is more than enough for great tutorials
- you can upload straight to YouTube or save it to your computer in 3 different formats (MP4, AVI, FLV)
- web cam recording
as a PRO
- same as “free” plus the following
- 60 minutes of recording time
- 15 minutes of hosting per video on Screencast-o-Matic site
- no watermark on the videos
- besides making videos of tutorials in your browser, you can record anything on your computer
- password protection for your videos
- Screencast-o-Matic editing tools
And again, for $9, I don’t think there is anything that can beat them.
I really felt it is a great tool many of you might use good and I hope you will like it.

I wanna hear if you used this tool? If not, are you using another one or you are not into videos just yet?
