Google’s Matt Cutts Gives Basic Ideas About How To Get Better Rankings on Google
Matt Cutts is often the “voice of Google” on all matters SEO related, and a name you will come to know if you make a study of SEO.
Matt mentioned the need to fill in each Posts, Page and Site’s “title tag” and “meta description”. These are not the usual title at the top and the content.
These are separate fields in WordPress and if your theme is not SEO rich such as Thesis and Genesis, then you will need a plugin such as Platinum SEO (or All in One SEO) to be able to easily add this information. This is one of a couple plugins that assist with “on-site/on-page” SEO which is the SEO related to the content specifically itself, not the links coming to the content.
If you’re new to on-page SEO, I’ve found the SEOPressor plugin to be very useful and am a proud affiliate.
Setting up a Google Webmaster account (along with the similar accounts for Yahoo and Bing) is an important SEO step and one that is often overlooked as people tend to only think about Google Analytics which is a separate site. While its not the “optimum” way to add the codes, the best way for many that are afraid of adding code directly to their theme to get verified with all of these sites (as well as Alexa, Compete, Analytics and many more) is a great plugin called All-in-One Webmaster.
It’s always fun to discuss that even though Matt “should” be a Google loyalist, like most SEO specialists… Matt uses WordPress!
