How To Easily Set Up A
Custom URL For Google+
Google Plus Profile/Page URLs are obnoxious!
There, I said it! Everyone is anxiously waiting on Google to give us a true short URL (not just our plus URL).
There are two ways to create a more memorable URL for your account.
The first is through redirecting a sub-domain. While highly recommended and preferred, this is above what most people are willing to go through!
The second is through use of a non-official, non-US-owned service called http://gplus.to/
This service is super simple to set up and works for both profiles and pages alike. The downside however is that it could easily be hijacked and used nefariously since it is completely unprotected.
- http://gplus.to/AskKim (to my profile)
- http://gplus.to/JustAskKim (to my page)
You may have noted by now that I almost never use these things. For me, there’s a little too much risk involved. However, it has been several months and there have been no issues.
The redirect I DO use is which was relatively easy (but harder than using gplus.to) to set up within GoDaddy domain settings and I OWN control of. This would let me redirect the traffic in the future if needed. (I have the same type of links for FB etc as well.)
One OFFICIAL but not short vanity URL you also have available to you is your username attached to your profile, like this: http://profiles.google.com/kimjcastleberry This also, as far as I can tell, does not work for pages.
So why do I even HAVE the links above for gplus.to if I don’t use them? That’s simple.. it’s brand name control! If I did not set them up, someone else could use my brand as their own and that might create more confusion than I would like. So this lets me “hold” them safely.
Hope you enjoyed this tip!
