Skip the WAMP Server
Instant WordPress Rocks!
Ever been somewhere with poor internet and wanted to demonstrate WordPress but couldn’t?
Ever want to develop on your WordPress theme, plugins or layout without risking damage to your main site?
Installing WordPress locally (meaning on your local computer) has always been the answer, but using a WAMP software stack is messy.
Fortunately for Windows users, there’s now an amazing little application called Instant WordPress that lets you not only have WordPress up and running locally in a matter of minutes… but do so from a USB thumb-drive!
Mac & Linux users might want to check out Bitnami for similar but perhaps not as polished features.
Because I’ve installed WAMP before, I seriously underestimated this little application when I first ran into it, but after first Francisco Perez and then Lorelle VanFossen recommended it, I used a recent problem with a client site as a good excuse to test it out – and was glad I did!
Seriously, now ANYONE (windows based) can have WordPress on their local machine for testing. It’s incredibly simple to use. Even better is that its free. There is however a very affordable ebook about how to make the most of it if you need more guidance.
In addition to providing a clean (fresh) installation, it can also take a snapshot of an existing site, though I have not tested that out yet.
There’s a great little Instant WordPress tutorial/introduction video available here, check it out!
Taking The Headaches Out Of Internet Marketing
PS: Because server software gets upgrades from time to time, you will want to download a fresh copy every six months or so if you are using it for testing.
