Replying to comments is an vital part of growing a strong site.
If you don’t respond to comments you are setting up a monologue, not a dialog. Without interaction there is no point in even having comments enable (or a blog for that matter) as relationship building is nipped in the bud before it ever has a chance to bloom. You don’t have to reply to all, but at least majority, and especially the first handfull per post.

Pictures speak louder than privacy restricted words!
Always use a clear, professional image of yourself as your profile picture. Not only is this essential and good manners for networking but your profile picture is always visible from the "outside" even with privacy restrictions in place! (Besides I’ve never been a "friend" of a brand logo, fan yes friend no!)
