Then the new Google+ social network showed up and surprised us all and turned my little social tech world on its ear all week!If you haven’t gotten a Google+ invite yet – or access to the webinar I did – be sure to let me know. The webinar being taken off my blog shortly and will be listed for sale so be sure you enjoy one of the perks of being a subscriber!
|Where does Google+ Fit In?…Somewhere between chaos and madness we start to wonder how we’re going to manage another social site… |
Anything we write about G+ could change tomorrow as not all of the platform is in place (we know business/marketing stuff is coming, games are coming, and API access (apps) are coming).
However, in light of that, is it time to get on G+? Here’s some questions to ask yourself.
Are you afraid of a place where, even when using the privacy tools there may be bugs in the privacy, so you must always treat as public? (If so, then skip G+ till it’s out of beta.)
Are you looking for an easy place to chat, play games and share baby pictures with your parents, siblings, cousins? (It will be 6-12 months before these users begin making the most of G+ if the platform holds. These users are on FB for now.)
Are you in the social marketing niche (in any of its forms) and looking to be seen as a thought leader, innovator, or reporter? (Then you need to be on G+ NOW.)
Are you a low man on the totem pole in a industry with “big dogs” that wants a chance to engage with these big dogs far more easily? (Jump on G+ now, because without the marketing, its seriously one big chat box and you can TALK to people you never thought you could, as acquaintances, developing real lasting relationships.)
Are you looking for an easy place to promote your brand, do business without breaking TOS, and engage as a brand? (Stay on FB for now, as G+ is not ready for marketers and currently allows no brand accounts.)
Are you looking for a chance to get out of the incestuous waters of Facebook where all your friends are already friends with each other and meeting truly NEW people is unusual? (Jump into G+ and keep an eye on a lot of the public chats by industry leads and connect with those who reply… this works on FB pages but is less socially acceptable than on G+.)
Are you allergic to technology bugs? (Please sign out of all of your social accounts and browser immediately, as no where is safe!)
Check BEFORE You Upgrade
This week is time to upgrade to the new WP 3.2 but it brings a new precaution.
This is the first version to drop support for several older hosting environments (older php and mysql stuff) and because of that, if your host is not fully updated you could find yourself in an ugly bind when you go to upgrade.
Fortunately it’s SUPER easy to test if your host has acceptable versions of these tools by installing the simple to use “Health Check” plugin.
All my usual disclaimers for backing up your site FIRST and then doing a de-activation of themes/plugins before upgrading still apply and should be old hat to you by now.
If you need to open a support ticket for assistance getting backed up and upgraded just drop me an email.

Chrome Extensions Bring Neat Possibilities…
A two-for-one deal…
Constantly having to flip back and forth between G+ and twitter and FB can be a pain in the butt.
Now you can easily embed FB right into your G+ page using “Google+Facebook” extension for the Chrome browser.
Additionally, the “Extended Share” extension adds send to Facebook/ LinkedIn/ Twitter and more to the G+ interface, making cross-platform business work less cumbersome.
