Supply & Demand
Keyword research is the second step on your path to online profits. Once you have a list of potential niches or micro niches you can use keyword research tools to:
– Analyze supply
– Evaluate demand
– Predict Profits
– Add more potential niche possibilities
– Generate content ideas
And that’s actually just the beginning of what keyword research tools can do for you. However, since we’re talking about developing a niche let’s focus on the first two uses for keyword research.
With any keyword research tool you choose whether it’s Google’s free tool or a paid tool like Market Samurai you’re going to initially look at how much supply there is for your chosen keywords. Supply is tantamount to competition. The more websites who are focusing on that keyword, the more competition you have.
Demand means the number of people who are looking for your keywords. If you have one million people looking for your keywords on a daily basis and only five sites are focusing on those keywords then you have yourself a superior niche.
(This is an extremely unlikely scenario by the way. Any keywords that have 1 million people searching for them daily are most certainly already being targeted.)
The Ideal Situation
The ideal situation is a ratio of supply to demand that meets your goals and timeline. If you are willing to put in the work and spend a year, or more, building your website and content then it’s perfectly okay to choose a niche that has a fair amount of competition and a lot of demand.
On the other hand if you want results quickly, then you’re going to want to find a niche that doesn’t have much supply and still has a good amount of demand. The ideal situation therefore depends largely on your goals.

Finding the right niche for you is a balance of science and intuition. Know what you want to achieve and what you’re willing to do to achieve it. Then research your niches using keyword tools.
