Looking for Dofollow, Commentluv, Keywordluv enabled blogs in our community? I’m starting a list of those I know!

This is for the benefit of my regular reader community. If this is your first visit please hang out with us and get to know the community here! If you’ve been here repeatedly and have set your blog up with these tools, please let me know so I can list you!

Remember that this list may not be current. Also remember that old commentluv links are not affected only new ones so when you check to be sure that the site is still DoFollow be sure you check a new link (or your own new link left there)!

Remember, backlinks from these blogs are approx. 10x stronger than links from standard wordpress blogs. Soak up the link juice baby!

Kim, mine has CommentLuv and is a turns into a Do-follow when a person has 3 comments and above. I use linky-love for my do-follow which requires a minimum of three to become a do-follow for your link. What plugin do you use for your do-follow?

Kimberly Castleberry May 14, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I am using one actually named “DoFollow” but I believe its technically sem-DoFollow as a folder name in your plugins folder. You can find more about what software I’m using and why here: http://just-ask-kim.com/social-networking/blogging/dofollow/

I was using Linky-Love until I went fully dofollow with that post. The downside of Lucy’s is that it does not strip the nofollow from the commentluv links. I just rechecked one of Jacquie’s posts on your blog to be sure you were seeing the same situation. This makes you partial-dofollow, since you have one link that eventually can be dofollow and one that never will be.

Lucy’s is a great intermediary option, it helped me keep spam to a sane level for several months but eventually was not able to stop the influx. So far this has been a much more successful stacked combo (see that post).

Thanks so much for starting this list. I have loaded and activated the sem-dofollow, keyword luv, comment luv, and top commentators plugins on my wordpress blog. Top commentators is a plug in that rewards frequent commenters with a link on your home page. The whole thing can be set to reset every month.

Kimberly Castleberry May 14, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Although I flat out forgot to use your keywordluv, I stopped by, left a comment and will add you to list if you return. If my memory serves me (it might not!) this is your first visit here. I apologize for not adding you immediately, but I am not running an open directory so much as a list of those who are regulars and working to help each other out here. I’m using this list to encourage the community to work together on this. If you stop back by and chose to hang out with us, I will gladly list you. Even without being listed your link is here in the comment section for others to follow.

You’re off to a good start with that blog. Thanks for the reminder about Top Commentator. I also use that although I only have it displaying on the home page. Its another great dofollow application that is definitely worth mentioning! Hope to see you back soon!

This is really great. Having a list of DoFollow blogs is really powerful and can really help with the SEO. Also having KeywordLuv rock. That’s why I have added them to my blog as well. Mine is a DoFollow after 3 comments.

Kimberly Castleberry July 12, 2010 at 1:26 am

10x stronger because a DoFollow backlink is worth WAY more SEO value than a nofollow backlink. All wordpress comment links are nofollow by default which does not share the link juice. When we turn off the no-follow (making it DoFollow) the links actually get more SEO points!

I’ve been do-follow for some time now. I also installed ComLuv when I entered their contest. So far ComLuv has been a net benefit, but I am still waiting for enough data to develop in order to do a true appraisal of its worth. I’m also doing some investigation into the effects of having so many outgoing links created on a blog on that blogs ranking and if it is costing them “Google juice”. For the time being I’m content to give it a try and am optimistic.

This is great. I love to read blogs, so link building isn’t a chore for me. It would be great for everyone if we all used kw luv and do follow. They can be hard to find and a lot of webmasters will delete your comment if you add a kw instead of your name.

Frank from Web Design Los Angeles July 22, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I would say that comment luv is the more confusing of the two. Or just that it requires more maintenance.

CommetLuv is a superb feature to have on your blog and it is nice to see community jumping in on it. Comments are beneficial both ways, as long as they are on topic and add to conversation.

I have been writing on my blog about CommentLuv since it was first released to the public and love how easy it becomes to find blogs that share my love :-)

Hey Alex, thanks for stopping in! Sounds like you’re a vet with commenluv then! I love how passionate the entire community is about this little gem of a plugin.

I agree though about “as long as they’re on topic and add to the conversation”, which is something that has to be watched for! Sadly all things that are good will always be subject to their degree of spammy behavior. Definitely worth kicking the spammers out to give the link love to my loyal friends and readers!

Hi Kim,

Thanks for sharing the list girlfriend! =) Great idea and awesome way for a community to support each other.

I’ve been attempting to switch my site to a dofollow for some time but running into technical issues. My current comment system does not work with dofollow plugins and switching it to the default doesn’t look very appealing.

But I am going to have another go at this tonight, as I see the benefits of it for both the site owner and the commentator.

Thanks again and have a fantastic week!

P.S. Saw you have G.A.S.P installed. ANOTHER reason to switch to the default comment system. It doesn’t work with Disqus either. ;-(

Hi Kimberly, this was very informative and you definitely provided new information for me. I actually almost understand, but since this is new to me, I am still a little unclear. I have a blog and get many comments, which I moderate, and it gets many comments which have a “nofollow” text in them, which I had no idea what it was. Now, I have an idea, though still not sure what to do with those comments. Usually, I just delete them. They don’t really seem to be saying anything and I get a lot of spam to my blog. Any tips you would like to offer or send me somewhere for more information would be much appreciated! Great blog you have! Thanks so much, Andrea

Heya Kim! Just saw you Tweet this post. I had my site set to DoFollow for a long time and ended up on several do follow lists, probably because I have decent PageRank.

Unfortunately 99.9% of the traffic that came to my site via those lists were spammers so I turned off the DoFollow. :(

I hate that I ended up doing that. It goes against my grain to penalize good folks because of bad operators. But having seen spam on my site drop from 5K+ a day down to just a few hundred, it makes a big difference.

Kimberly Castleberry October 27, 2010 at 1:01 am

Hey Chris, there’s a fairly large community of commentluv + keywordluv + dofollow blogs that have been really working together to network and help each other out. One of the projects that recently came out of that – although mostly created by the need to kick Akismet to the curb till they fix stealth destroying of comments – is the “G.A.S.P.” plugin that you saw on my blog that verifies human behavior. Most of us originally tried to move to captcha but a browser hiccup or browser caching (faster fox addon) makes captcha have issues and a form field the bots have learned to fill in half the time anyways. So far this checkbox is working remarkably well at keeping the bots out of my hair and really keeping spam to a miniumum. Perhaps you could give it a try? You can find more about it here: http://www.growmap.com/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/ Its in the wordpress repository now and was coded by Andy Bailey, same guy behind commentluv so you know its solid. Keep me posted!
Kimberly

Chris Cree October 27, 2010 at 7:19 am

Heya Kim! I saw the check box but didn’t think much of it. I’ll check out the G.A.S.P. plugin and, depending on how things go I may turn on DoFollow again. I’ve been meaning to install CommentLuv for a while now too so finally got around to it. Thanks for mentioning that too. :)

Grant October 29, 2010 at 2:05 am

If you install commentLuv and keywordLuv does your wordpress blog become dofollow by default? Or is there something else I need to do? Thanks Grant
Grant invites you to read…Corporate Art for officesMy Profile

Kimberly Castleberry October 29, 2010 at 3:02 am

Hey Grant, no those plugins do not provide dofollow status. There are certainly no-follow, commentluv-enabled, keywordluv-enabled blogs. The third plugin in the stack (or forth if you also grab G.A.S.P. to cut down on spam) is http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sem-dofollow/ (actualyl there are many dofollow plugins, this is just the one I use.) Growmaps Anti Spambot Plugin (G.A.S.P) rounds out the set and helps keep the influx of bots to a minimum. Hope that makes sense!

Depends on which spam filter you’re running. It took me about 6 months before the spam was unbearable and was beating up Akismet. Although akismet has known issues at the moment anyways. I tried SI Captcha for a while with good results but captchas don’t always work if a browser has a cache issue… so several in the community recently coded GASP to really cut down on the spam bots. It wont stop human spam but it stops the bots pretty well.

Its very interesting that last line of the poost ‘WARNING’

I understand, how odd it feels when replying somebody’s comment as ‘Hi Replica Watches’. People know the importance of anchor text in links (SEO Smarts!) but do not care if the blog is kewyordLuv enabled. They can show their name safely linking the anchor text with their site.

Why would you wanna subject your blog to comments that are just made for the purpose of a dofollow link?

dofollow sites generally rank lower and as such links from them have a lower value and in the future I see Google and other engines giving penalties for sites that spawn dofollow spam.

Good idea. I remember I was having a great discussion with somebody about homeschooling on a different site but that person had no name so I had no idea if they were a male or a female. It made for a strange discussion which was a shame. If that person just had a proper name instead of just a keyword it would have enhanced the discussion.

Jack Chan from Graphic Tees January 24, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Hi Kim,
I also have a similar question mentioned by Grant. If a blog owner has “NoFollow” site, does that mean even he or she has installed either commentLuv or KeywordLuv, would the search engine crawl the keyword as a “DoFollow”? I have a wordpress blog and I want to install both keywordluv and commentluv plug-in, but I would like to know how to make it as a “DoFollow” blog?

Kimberly Castleberry January 27, 2011 at 5:12 am

Jack (hope that’s your name as I grabbed it from your email… I usually delete comments with no names attached)

Let me see if I can explain this a little better. A WordPress site has nofollow on all comment links automatically (that’s its normal behavior). It REQUIRES a dofollow plugin to make any of those links dofollow (and there are a few dofollow plugins that can not affect the commentluv link). Unless the blog author has installed a dofollow plugin, both the keywordluv link and the commentluv link are nofollow. Use of either of those plugins alone does NOT create a dofollow blog or a dofollow link. Now, a keyworded nofollow link is still worth more than a non-keyworded nofollow link… but we both know that that’s still not but a fraction of what a dofollow link is worth! Also, a dofollow plugin has to be existing when the link is created or the link will be nofollow… so if you come back next week and apply a dofollow plugin and the link was already nofollow it will stay nofollow generally speaking.

I do have to be very careful answering as to how Google will behave however… we can only assume it will do what it is told. However, google has indicated that often times they evaluate the link in relation to a lot of other factors and they chose on their own how they “credit” the link… sometimes they follow a nofollow and some times they ignore a dofollow… neither situation is common but they have told us that much.

To make your blog dofollow you need to add a do-follow plugin. The best one I’ve found, that manages to affect all the things we want it to is http://www.semiologic.com/software/dofollow/ (its in the wordpress plugin search, search for Dofollow and find the one by Semiologic). This plugin has done a great job for me. I did recently uninstall it but only because I put same do-follow code into my theme’s custom-function file as this plugin uses. So I’m essentially running the plugins code but not as a plugin.

Hope this helps!
Kimberly

Keywordluv and Do Follow is a great way to get people to read and contribute to your blog and also means that people can get the backlinks they need for webpages and drive more traffic to their sites too! I think it is important to moderate all comments to stop the spammers ruining it for everyone else! Although I have heard about a plugin called the ‘Anti Spambot plugin’, haven’t used it myself yet though. Thanks!

Kimberly Castleberry February 24, 2011 at 12:59 pm

I guess, commentluv is more seo friendly and more useful to the blogger. Even you can get more comments as the commentor doesn’t have the patience to register and say those few good words to you. It is is easier for him/her just to give his comment right away proving a few of his details. My preference -commentluv

Grant from Corporate Portraits London March 24, 2011 at 6:37 am

Hi Kim is this still the best plugin to make my blog nofollow?http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sem-dofollow/ also does this affect in anyway how google ranks my blog? Thanks for all your help – Grant

Kimberly Castleberry March 24, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Grant, SEM’s DoFollow plugin is still the preferred. The plugin itself does not outright affect your ranking… however the fact that all of your comment links created AFTER the plugin is installed become DoFollow means that more linkjuice flows out of your blog and means that yes rankings can be impacted. Usually its manageable but there is a change in link juice (page rank) flow. Its the downside of becoming DoFollow. As I’ve hit Alexa 27k, it’s hard to argue that it’s hurt me. However, the volume of comments at this level necessitate that I will be putting in SEO Super Comments in the near future even though I removed it months and months back because its not appropriate on a smaller blog that’s using DoFollow to get traffic. This is wny most blogs are nofollow, why the dofollow community is special and why I have such a strict comment policy in place!
Kimberly
PS: You need to actually visit the rest of my blog and you’d notice on the home page I have a sticky post where I’m building a new DoFollow list. Lots of great comments in there of recommended blogs. If you’re looking for more dofollow/keywordluv/CL blogs, check that one out. It will eventually be used to re-populate this list, and I will be closing comments here as this post gets me an insane volume of spam.

Seriously, this article ROCKS!! I am really searching and trying to find the best ways to refer my clients to. I have tried ev-er-y-thing under the sun. (I know you’ve heard that one before!) I loathe automation commenting. I think it’s slimy!! I search for GOOD blogs to read, follow and comment on. This is a little bit slower of a process, but it pays off big in the end. I still don’t get why people don’t get that!! Sure, you can use automation to comment on most people’s blogs that are unfamiliar with the “signs” of automation, but those who have quality built blogs will spot it a mile away and delete!!! I would rather spend the time investing into my blog than to automate it.

Plus, I have REALLY found a lot of great people to connect with and establish relationships with. And really, isn’t that worth more??

Thank you for the great post. I love soaking up QUALITY information and you have got a ton of it!! I cannot wait to read more as well :)

Awesome blog. The commentluv plugin has been kind to me. I have to admit, that there were not many sites that I left a comment on prior to the plugin. This is the best way now to get backlinks. For a non profit like us, this really helps because we do not have to spend a lot. It takes time to post comments and I don’t have any. Now that we’re rewarded with a link for doing so, it is more than worth it. Thank you for using it.

Hi Kim, can you please clarify my doubt? i am new to social marketing and I got two sites. My question is – can I create a blog of my own in wordpress (with KeywordLuv and commentLuv) and use it to get more back links for my two sites by adding self comments ?

Kimberly Castleberry July 4, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Tracy, what your proposing is not nearly that simple, if it were, everyone would set up 100 blogs and do it themselves. Those are called link farms and link-rings and are a quick way to get highly punished by Google. What you’re delving into is black hat techniques because it is blatant cheating. You can of course use those terms and look further into it but because Google tracks the IP addresses of your sites as well as the number of links between two sites you quickly get into messy water. That’s not to say that your blogs cant interlink OCCASIONALLY where fully appropriate and where correct to do so but that creating link-exchange scenarios between them is dangerous. I hope that makes sense Tracy.

I’m of course looking specifically for dofollow blogs in the fitness and weight loss niches but as long as I can contribute to a conversation, I’m always happy to participate and get some linkluv in return. I use Comluv w/ dofollow on my blog and am really considering adding keywordluv. I just can’t think of a good reason not to.

If spam gets out of control, then I guess I could just take that as a lesson learned. OK. I’ve talked myself into it. I’ll add Keywordluv today!
