Do you know why Google is making so much money with Adwords? Because they target them so good that people get a great ROI and keep paying for more ads.
Do you know why Adsense users make so much money? Targeting again. When you land on a site with Adsense ads on it, you will most likely see something you need.
So when you see something that works for a big company like Google, why not do it yourself and make money? That is exactly what I am going to show you here.
This targeting will practically mean creating multiple different sidebars for your blog and then filling them up with widgets. But let’s go one step at the time.
Creating custom sidebars in WordPress
For Genesis users
This is going to be easy. If you are using Genesis framework, Studiopress peeps have a bunch of great free plugins you can use to enhance your blog looks and function.
In this case, they have a free Genesis Simple Sidebars plugin (you can install it through your dashboard) that will create different sidebars on your blog. Put widgets in those sidebars and then assign different sidebars to different pages and posts. This is what you will have in your dashboard when you are writing/editing a page or a post.
In my case, considering I am using only one (primary) sidebar, I would change it, going from Default to which ever sidebar I want to set up for the page.
For other themes
I have not tried this plugin so I am not going to guarantee for it, but it seems it has all the options you may want. It creates custom sidebars like the one above, but it should work with all themes. It is called Custom Sidebars and you can install it through your dashboard (author is Marquex).
How to target ads with custom sidebars
Now that you have the sidebars set up, decide what you want in them.
Targeting would work like this for example:
- On all my SEO posts, I could set up a Market Samurai Keyword Research Tool ad.
- On my email marketing posts, I could put up the ad for Aweber, and so on.
I am not using targeting on this blog at the moment, but I have it all set up to roll in the future, after I finish some things I plan to put up. I do however have custom sidebars, you can see that the sidebar on this post is different from the Online Income Star home page.
I did try this targeting for myself and I do actually target ads on some of my niche sites. This strategy works great, I put products in sidebars that are tightly related to the topic of the post. Kinda like doing my own Adsense, lol, except I make more money selling those products than having Adsense ads on them.
After putting targeted ads in sidebars on those sites, my click through rate for the products (usually Clickbank and Amazon) went up by at least 50% and in some cases well over 200%!
Note that this strategy is not for blogging blogs only! This works for any kind of blog. On a fitness blog, for example, you can target ads by the topic, like:
- home gym pages – ads for home gym equipment
- healthy eating pages – ads for healthy cookbooks
- muscle building pages – ads for supplements, etc.
If you don’t have a product you want to promote that is related to a post, you can always add a book from Amazon that is somewhat related to your topic (you will always find one to match) and promote it. Why? There is a big possibility that once you get people on Amazon from your site, they will end up buying something, even if it isn’t the thing you promote :)
Showing targeted ads to your readers will increase your click through rate and income. You are not only trying to get more money, but you are actually helping people by showing them a related product they may need.
Now that I’ve showed you how easy it is to actually do it, I see no reason not to try it :)
So have you done this before? Do you plan to do it?
