I started a new project yesterday. It kinda happened spontaneously. I wanted to write about it a long time ago. I already had a site on the same topic. I am a trainer. I am fit as I’ve ever been and I know a lot of my friends need motivation and help.
So I started the Fit Chick Café.
Let’s see how it all happened and what is to become of it…
Old fitness site(s)
I already had a fitness site aimed at women, sitting there, never had time to work on it. And just a few days ago, I started getting rid of sites that I don’t have time to work on, no matter how much money they were making. I even had a fitness related site I sold when I started this blog.
So the desire to work on this topic online was always there. I just needed to feel it!
The new idea
I wanted to create something that isn’t a site with SEOed content create with a goal to make money. The type you write making sure Google will love, work hard on driving traffic to and then let them sit and bring in the coins (hoping Google will like it forever). Yes, I love the passive income and I will always have some, but if I am not enjoying it along the way, I am moving along.
So it had to be something that would feel like a game. Coffee with friends. Workout that kicks your butt but makes you feel great at the same time. Girls sitting together after a fitness class, gossiping about Victoria Beckham’s legs.
And that is exactly what I plan to make of that blog. Place to get motivated, share tips, learn, and anything that will make you feel like a Fit Chick.
The blog doesn’t have a real launch. My friend Kim shared the blog’s Facebook page with our blogging friends before the blog was ready (had only one post), so normally, after seeing the page, people would check out the blog. So the cat is out of the bag, lol. I was originally thinking about adding about 10 posts before I share it with you. Of course, I am not complaining, she helped me reach 25 fans in no time and get my pretty Facebook URL!
A project to learn from?
After people leaving a few comments with well wishes, I realized that the idea I have for the blog may be a great experiment to see if the way we usually run our blogs is better (or worse) compared to the way I plan to run that one.
For example, I plan to do no SEO on that blog. Or to be more precise, I will not do any keyword research. I won’t try to put the keywords in all the right places on the blog. I will not try to maintain the length of a post that is believed for Google to love.
Pretty much I won’t give a rat’s ass about Google or any other search engine. The only SEO, if you want to call it that way, is going to be the categories and tags, but they won’t be researched, they will be common sense. So on a fitness sites, the most logical thing to do is to have a “weight loss” category. What are the odds for ranking for that :)
Yes, I will monetize the site. It is just so normal for me to link to a product I like or use. However, I won’t join every affiliate program for everything I mention. So there are going to be cases when I will just link to the thing I am recommending for your convenience.
One day, instead, I may try the “If you like this post, buy me a granola bar” donation button :)
The difference between this and my other fitness sites is that the monetization is not the reason I created the site.
I plan to mainly use Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube.
Facebook just feels like a great place for any site and I have a lot of friends who will need these tips. I installed the Facebook comments on the blog for all of those that are not bloggers, but still want to leave a message. (You would not believe how many people don’t understand the WP commenting system.)
Pinterest is for me a natural way to share site like mine… of course that will mean working on photos more!
YouTube is one of my favorite sites, and I’ve always wanted to make more videos. I keep getting into it slowly with this blog but it is time to step it up.
I plan to make videos where I talk about some tips or motivation, maybe show a few yummy recipes and most important, hope to be able to make videos with exercises. This will probably require some organization on my part, it is hard to do it alone.
Secondary social media will be Twitter and Google+.
I plan to build a list and hope to start soon. I plan to use it to send a weekly tip and update people about new posts on my blog or something good I find on other blogs. I just think getting people to let you in their inbox is even more personal and I feel like this blog is going to be a lot of personal(ity)!
I will not actively go out to build links and generate traffic. I will leave comments on blogs I read, related to fitness… sometimes. But I will not go on blog commenting sprees like I did with some other sites. Also, I may guest post or do some other form of traffic generation but only if I have something really special to share or I am invited to do so.
“This is insanity”
That is what a friend of mine told me, when I explained this to him. He said that is all exactly the opposite to what you are supposed to do when you want to have a successful blog that makes piles of money. Exactly! But this is not that type of blog.
This is me all out there. This is MY experience with everything fitness and health related. I don’t care if the blog never makes a dime. I will only care to share some interesting stuff I learned in previous years and hope it helps someone.
And the really interesting part is – I am actually curious to see how the site does with search engines eventually. Cause it will all be about human experience on the site and I hope to give something to Fit Chicks they will want to come back for.
I want to mention that I spent a few hours on design of the blog, thinking about how I would want my gym with an attached Café to look.
The theme used is Blissful theme. It is by default a very soft pink wedding theme, so I played with some CSS and
- changed the colors throughout the design
- made the header a bit taller
- changed the font of the theme
- change the titles font
- replaced the image that shows up as title background
- created custom social media buttons/banners
- few other little tweaks
I think the design pictures exactly me, strong colors but still girly with a strong title font. I am liking it at the moment :)
My main wish for this is to have fun! Hangout with girls and women like me and be healthy and fit! And we will see how the site does in the sense we are used to measure it in.
