Solving Out Of Memory Errors
On WordPress XML Import
Okay, I don’t usually publish misleading titles but those are the words I THOUGHT I needed when my WordPress XML file was just too darn big!
Turns out that while there is no easy way to compress or optimize the WordPress Import file (to solve those pesky memory errors) that what you can do is quickly and easily split the file.
The WXR File Splitter (A term I didn’t think to search for!) will take any size export file and cleave it into cute little 2.0 MB chunks, small enough that even most really restrictive hosting accounts can get it imported.
The WXR File Splitter is a small, free application for Windows. There may be something equivalent for Mac but I’m not certain.
It easily chopped one of my 50MB XML WordPress Import files, which was freaking out the hosting account even after raising the hosting memory limit, into bite sized pieces that worked. (I tried to make them 10.0 MB at first, but those were still too big due to all the images I use in my blog posts.) Use the 2.0 MB option.
Now, while there is no way to compress or optimize your WXR WordPress XML Import/Export file, you can easily still get that bad-boy to import! (And without your host yelling at you for exhausting the system memory!)
