Can I Make Cash
This question comes from Maria Erving, a long-time reader here at Just-Ask-Kim.com
Hi Kim, Hope all is well on your end:-)
I was wondering if you have any knowledge about ads/paid links on websites? Someone contacted me and asked if they could have a link in one of my articles and they would pay me $40 for it.
Is this a good idea or not you think? I read somewhere that those kinds of “opportunities” are no good and that Google doesn’t like it, is that so? Hope you can advise.
Great question Maria!
Google has strictly said that paid, sponsored, or incentivised dofollow link placement is a no-no. This mostly refers to links that pass link-juice (are dofollow links) freely.
Google’s requirements for nofollow are pretty clear and not to be ignored. Full disclosure is also a legal obligation.
While I WILL sell a disclosed banner ad placement in a post, it is only with a nofollow link. A link of this type is only for the purpose of generating click sales and not for the purpose of SEO.
I turn down requests to buy dofollow links from my site because they compromise my site. While, admittedly, they are somewhat hard to track, the risk of Google de-indexing my site is way too high for me to gamble with.
Here’s another blogger coaching her community on how to handle links when they review products.
You have to be very careful with this because, while the cash is tempting, the penalty is having your site deindexed (removed) from Google. Please don’t play with fire… it will hurt!
Have you received any requests to run paid links on your blog? How did you handle them?
