PodCasts As Emerging Media…
When I heard one of my favorite highly-successful Internet Marketing guys, James Schramko, mention in the course Traffic Grab (which I highly recommend) that podcasts are very real source of traffic for him… and one that’s growing.. I initially poo-poo’d on the idea.
I’d had some experiences with podcasts when they first iht the scene back in 2005 and had not paid them a lot of attention since.
One of the things I hate most about internet marketing is that so much of the training keeps me tethered to the PC. Between stuff to read, videos to watch, sites to visit and webinars to attend, I don’t get much else done that isn’t right here at the desk!
I honestly missed the constant influx of leadership training tapes/CDs and audiobooks that were part of a company I am no longer with. They did a lot for helping me grow as a professional and become a better person… all while being easy to consume while I was not at the PC!
When I developed the recent issue with my eyes, suddenly the amount of screentime became a very very real issue.. and something I couldn’t just push myself to work through.
That’s when I finally sat down and started investigating some podcast listening software for my smart phone and started really looking at what was available.
What I found is that it’s an industry that has been waiting in the wing and is definitely coming to maturity as smartphones boom. Originally they were yet another PC-tether but now you can easily stream or download them straight to your phone and listen to them like regular radio shows with tons of freedom.
And I noticed that many of them were available as both video and audio podcasts… and those things weren’t too darn different than what many of us are already doing with video. In fact, if you already routinely produce webcam video, converting that into both formats is pretty simple and you’re into podcast category in a heartbeat.
What’s incredible though is that suddenly I have an easy way to continue to get a portion of the trainings I need into my head daily… without having to sit in front of this screen. Would you believe that I’m getting more house work done?!?!
Of course, its no replacement for technical screencasts, but there is plenty of what we do that does not require a screencast… and thus lends itself well to a radio show!
I urge you to take a look at this media as a way to leverage your time efficiently, take advantage of drive-times and house cleaning times and other times when you can multitask, and generally be more productive.
PocketCasts is the best software I’ve found so far for the smart phones and it rocks. I don’t have to connect my phone to the pc to sync podcasts which I like. So easy. (Be sure to set them only to download on wi-fi if you have a limited data cell plan.) Its also possible to sync podcasts from itunes to an iphone very easily.
I’ll be talking a lot more about this media in the future… both on it’s impact on my business… and on some of the really interesting ways that marketers are leveraging it for traffic from multiple platforms. (Many marketers aren’t recycling this content effectively, something I learned in Traffic Grab and makes perfect sense.)
Because it’s easy to produce the audio… convert it to video with some simple images… and outsource it into a transcription… you have a highly flexible media type that is amazingly impactful for SEO/traffic when used correctly! That’s called leverage and something we all should be keeping an eye on!
Another blogger you may know (and if you don’t you’re missing out!) is Ms. Ileane from Basic Blog Tips who now is experimenting with an audioboo based micro-podcast at http://audioboo.fm/MsIleaneSpeaks. Subscribing to her podcast (put this address in your podcast app, not in Google reader) would be a great way to get a super lightweight sample of podcasts. Be sure to tell her I said Hey Boo!
Be on the lookout for more about podcasts from me in the future, including recommendations, tips, and some of the resources I’ve come across.
Are you taking advantage of podcasts? Have you heard of podcasting and wonder what its all about? If you’re already enjoying podcasts perhaps share some of the feed url’s of your favorites.

PS: Is there an experiment in podcasting in my future… possibly… very very possibly…
