WordPress Plugin Review:
The ReplyMe plugin is my secret to keeping my blog commentators coming back!
Note: While this plugin appears out of date, as of 9/1/12 ReplyMe is still structurally sound and stable. Normally we shy away from an outdated plugin but this one remains safe at this time.
One of the ongoing struggles with encouraging reader interaction on blogs is … encouraging reader interaction!
There are many steps that go into adapting the commenting system on WordPress to best accomplish our goals. These include things like enabling threading, enabling commenters to subscribe to comments, giving high quality backlinks (dofollow, commentluv, keywordluv), minimizing forced logins, etc…
Another concept that many bloggers find helps with reader engagement is to notify the commenter when a follow up reply has been left to their comment.
I have a Guide To Comment Reply Notification & Subscription Plugins that talks about a number of options and helps you sort out which is best for your blog.
For this same ability I was using a plugin called “Comment Reply Notification” but when it was temporarily not upgraded (works fine now) I moved to this one and simply have not had any reason to go back. Both plugins work well. (If you’re having to use WP Thread Comments, due to having an older theme, you do not need this plugin as it has similar features in its settings.)
In case it’s not clear, unless you know what you’re doing, there is no need to change ANY setting for this plugin to “just work”. This plugin works right out of the box.
This plugin DOES require the WordPress setting for Threaded Comments to be enabled natively (and the theme to support without the WP Thread Comment plugin). You can find that in Dashboard -> Left Sidebar -> Settings -> Discussion -> Other Comment Settings. [You probably already have this enabled.]
This simple little plugin helps you to further encourage reader engagement by making them aware of follow up comments. Make your comment policy clear and your follow up worth their time. Hopefully it goes without saying that you also need to make your reply comment interesting!
So, what are your thoughts on receiving follow up emails on blogs you have commented on? Do you find them interesting? useful? tedious? annoying? Is this affected by whether you are there for some reason you enjoy versus being there simply leaving a comment so you can get your backlink from their blog to build your SEO?
I personally prefer it, with or without an additional check-box, over needing to subscribe to the whole thread that may be super-active, just to keep up with if the author replied to me. How about you?
Let me know your thoughts and if you found this information useful I would be grateful if you would share it with others!
