Do Facebook & Twitter
Affect Your SEO?
Recently, a really impressive chart of SEO ranking factors was released and a lot of us spent a ton of time working through it and identifying how we could tighten up our results.
That chart contained a whole section on social signals… but what does Google say about them?
The question: “Are Facebook and Twitter signals part of the ranking algorithm? How much do they matter?”
“Facebook and Twitter are treated like any other pages in our web index,” Matt says. “But as far as doing special, specific, work to say you have this many followers on Twitter or this many likes on Facebook, to the best of my knowledge, we don’t currently have any signals like that in our web search ranking algorithms.”
Matt pointed out that there is positive correlation but not causation between items on FB having a lot of likes and items that rank well. It just so happens that Google and FB both tend to surface awesome content!
This said however… three things I do want to note
1) Facebook/Twitter social media can INDIRECTLY build SEO by exposing more people to your content which can then lead to them linking to it. Someone has to know your stuff exists before they can link to it… and FB/Twitter can be a great content discovery tool.
2) Facebook/Twitter social media DOES directly build your SEO by contributing links. Keep in mind that that only includes publicly searchable links such as those from FB Pages and those on twitter that are less than three months old.
3) Notice that he did not mention Google+. That’s because they OWN G+ and can much more easily index the items there. G+ is going to play a much more important role in SEO than FB/Twitter because Google has access to all that golden data.
Ana Hoffman over at Traffic Generation Cafe just released a great post, SEO Traffic 2014: Your One-Stop Reference Guide for Non-SEOs, that covers all of this as well as quite a bit of other things you may want to check out.
