Matt Cutts, head of Google’s Web Spam team share’s his thoughts on article marketing and his advice to webmasters.
I will say that it is worth nothing that his comments reflect how “article marketing” is typically done, rather than ways it can be used almost as a blog.
I’ll share some additional thoughts below, but let’s see what Matt has to say…
Some pretty strong recommendations there eh? And hopefully some things you are already doing!
While I don’t tend to encourage people to actively target article marketing as a primary link building strategy any more… so many methods are better including blog commenting… I do feel the need to point out one thing.
Google did drop the ranking of those article directory sites in a recent algorithm change and has “somewhat” devalued links from such places … but at this moment, the Google SEO/SERP algorithm still appears to us to give some value to those links and the algorithm places strong weight to sites with backlinks.
What this means is that it’s not that article marketing will not build backlinks for you now, its that it is not a great primary traffic course and needs considered in tandem with other methods.
Are you using article marketing as part of your multi-pronged traffic generation strategy? What methods are you using and do you feel they are synergistic? Do you feel its a good or bad thing that Google is taking this stance on article marketing?
