One thing you can’t overlook is other competing sites on Google when focusing on your link building, SEO, and online marketing campaigns.
Ever heard the phrase, ” I don’t get in fights I can’t win“? Well, this is how I look at it when I build a brand, affiliate site, blog, etc. Knowing what your competitors are doing is key to fighting a winning battle (and you want to win on Google don’t you?).
There are a lot of free useful tools out there and this article isn’t really going to be about using free services, but rather a professional tool that serious SEO’s will use.
SEOmoz.org Is Hands Down The Best
In order to see why a site is ranking we need some tools to help increase our chances of ranking good in the search engines. Why not follow the industry leading SEO’s (Rand Fishkin) and his elite team of SEO’s? You can always read his blog to stay current with SEO news, changes, advice, ect. One of my favorite blogs to read. There are other good ones out there like Seobook.com, but hey this post is about SEOmoz.org.
Inside SEOmoz.org – Pro Account
Ok, so basically what I do is I go in and start a new campaign. Put in your URL, keywords you are trying to rank for, etc. This will track with a plethora of data. This includes how your site is ranking, crawl diagnostics (showing your 404 errors, duplicate content, missing METAS, long URLs, rel canonical, etc.
All these things are vital to your sites health and essentially search engine rankings. You are going to have to wait for Roger the robot to do it, which can take a day or so, but he does it every week. Roger is my friend.
See week by week were your traffic is coming from and if it’s increasing or decreasing. For instance, I can login into my campaign I set up and see organic traffic is up 717% from last month. Export it to clients or for yourself in a in a .pdf file. But, stay tuned because a lot more jam packed into SEOmoz.org (other than just campaigns).
This is pretty cut and dry. Put in your keywords and URL and it will run a report showing you your URL on-page optimization score. This is based on a scale from A to F. You can even export results.
Tip: if you are doing SEO work for someone charge them to go over their on-page SEO and send them a report.
A lot of “SEO companies” do this! I have even seen people on Fiverr.com charging for this. I always run on-page analysis on my money pages, and pages I am trying to rank for on Google.
Track sites of your competitors. Find out what their anchors are, where they are linking from, and out do them. It’s not rocket science – build stronger links, natural link profile, and better on-page SEO and you will eventually beat them or come very close.
These are updated monthly and show your domain authority, page authority, anchors, and even historical data (to help match their link profile and let you track the progress).
Another thing I like is that you can see the number of retweets, likes, shares, plus 1’s. Filter the results, take notes of their internal linking as well as external linking. Add competitors and see how their link metrics compare to each other. You can always export these to .pdf or spreadsheet files, too.
This will show you tracking for Twitter and Facebook. Great feature and I love it! See who is Retweeting, Liking, Sharing, etc. Target these people personally and establish relationships with them. Very handy feature and I really have started using it a lot to find relevant webmasters and business contacts.
I am not the most “social” savvy but this has helped me out substantially. I am more of hybrid SEO/affiliate marketer, I know you wanted to know that, so you can rest in peace now that you heard that!
On Twitter, see who retweets you and their Klout score (basically how important they are on Twitter). Track your growth, interactions, metrics. And of course, you can export as a .pdf.
Research Tools – It Get’s Good Now!
Open Site Explorer is by far where I spend most of my time. You can get valuable information where people are getting links from, their page authority, social interactions, advanced reports, etc. The best part is you can export to a .pdf.
Go down the list and build your link building campaigns that way. Remember – slow and steady. Dancing means Google is taking note of the new links coming in.
See how your keywords have risen or fallen over time. You can track on Google, Bing, Yahoo. Even better you can specify what country too. Have your reports emailed to you or exported for clients. Really, not much to say – it’s ranking tracking, lol.
You know at the beginning, when I said “know the battle you are getting into”? This is what I meant.
“Keyword Analysis” shows you the difficulty score, search volume (exact and broad). Export your reports and see if it’s a battle you want to fight. Basically, I will know everything about all top 10 competing sites on Google and determine if I want it bad enough or move on to something easier. Like my web hosting review niche (ungodly hard), but I know what I am up against.
Put in your URL and it emails you millions of different things that can help you. Really, you could probably go around on eBay, webmaster forums, etc. and charge people $50 a pop for this service. It is well worth it and helps me rank tremendously!
You can ask an unlimited of numbers of questions to SEOmoz.org members, which are very helpful when you are stumped on issues and problems with SEO. It’s great and is so much better than going to forums where the person on the other end of the thread might know beans about SEO or whatever he/she is talking about.
Really being a part of a community is what SEOmoz.org is all about. You can read their blog for free with no pro account and acquire loads of useful information that can help grow your online ventures. Personally, I like “White Board Friday” because I like to stay current with SEO and what to look out for. It pays to stay ahead of the game! That and it’s all videos and I have the attention span of a 4 year old!
If you are total newbie and want to learn from a trusted source and not just some crappy Clickbank product that has been rehashed a thousand times you can buy their training courses.
Ten chapters of epic SEO knowledge. Stop reading the forums and learn the correct way. There is no magic bullet that makes you millions while you sleep.
Final Word on SEOmoz.org
It’s great and comes with a 30 day trial so if you don’t like it or it’s just not for you can cancel at anytime. Ewww I sound like a salesman! But, in all honesty if you’re serious about SEO you need SEOmoz.org. It is freaking awesome! I have been a member since 2010 (deaddogdesign send me an invite I need friends!). It has helped me tremendously. My 2 leopard geckos, crested gecko, and bearded dragon thank me everyday for providing them with so much food everyday! Seomoz.org has helped pay the bills.
