Now FB.com and FB.me URLs Arrive!
Not only does FB own the shortener http://on.fb.me/ but just about anywhere you see facebook.com you can replace it with fb.com or fb.me … this means my page is http://fb.com/AskKim – saving 6 characters – or – http://fb.me/AskKim – saving 7 characters!
This is a powerful piece of Facebook-Twitter integration and we’ve seen it being used automatically with the Twitter Facebook app but now we have access to it directly.
If you need to turn a long Facebook URL (perhaps one for a specific status) into a http://on.fb.me/ which is more “acceptable” than blindly using a “bit.ly” you still do this through using the Bitly tool which is pre-configured to turn facebook links into on.fb.me links.
So for example, this turns:
original link: https://www.facebook.com/Ask.Kim/posts/127015660700772
into new link: http://on.fb.me/hTJnEn
Here’s a real brief video that quickly shows off what I mentioned about the fb.me and fb.com urls now working the same as facebook.com URLs do.
As a fascinating bit of info, Mashable reports that Facebook payed $8.5 Million to purchase the fb.com domain and they did so because it will play an integral part in their upcoming new messaging system. (Talk about sticker shock!)
I invite you to share the new – SHORTER – urls to one of your personal Facebook pages below!
I can see myself using the new shorter URLs a lot of places particularly including business cards… where will YOU use the new URLs?
