The WordPress SEO course ended up coming together so nicely I split it into two webinars (which will become a static product). The second one is this Wed and there’s still time to jump in and get the recordings from session 1 and attend live for session 2. You can learn more here.
I love teaching webinars but I honestly hate editing them! Ran into a Camtasia bug with my newer high resolution monitor (file size issue for Windows) and if you ever hit the same bug, in the tech suppport area with a patch that worked really well and saved me! Thought I was going to have lost that recording but the patch fixed it, was very happy!
PS: Apologies for the email on Friday with the same subject line as the one from Wed. Didn’t want to email you again just to say oops though!
You Are Building An Email List Right?…
So now that Facebook is removing update capabilities from fan pages, whattcha gonna do?
I shared a stat near the bottom of this email about the sales conversion off of email marketing and how that often remains the leading force for those of us in marketing.
However, you can’t be in the FB market without hearing people telling you that your page is a list, and that email marketing is dying.
Email marketing is changing, there is no doubt. The churn and burn methods are failing as ISPs get smarter. People are more protective with their addresses today. People expect more respect today and are less “thankful” for you appearing in their inbox.
However, that said, response rates for email marketing still often blow Facebook out of the water and being a standardized platform it is highly likely that email marketing will out-live the Facebook platform. What will happen if Facebook only lives 3 more years (extreme case) and then you LOST all your hard work?
The power of an email list is that you own it and if you take care of it you can use it over and over.
Remember that you have to be using marketing techniques TOGETHER today… email PLUS social PLUS direct etc… we don’t live in a void and you will excel when you bring them together, just make sure the things that make you money you OWN!
Social Media Buttons Galore!
One of the first features that bloggers need to add to their blogs today are social media share buttons.
There’s a lot of ways to do this but it’s important to remember that the average visitor looks for a button they recognize, does not recognize hidden or uncommon ones, and will not “work” to find them.
There are standalone button plugins but for the novice, because these can conflict, I tend to recommend the DiggDigg plugin which lets you have all the buttons in as many formats as you want.
Only downside is that you have to re-enable normal display after you update the plugin and not update the plugin the first day its updated as its sometimes a little unstable.
Another way to do it – which results in a MUCH faster loading site – is to manually add (or have a coder add) the button codes right into your theme (or preferably skin or child theme if you’re using a good theme like Thesis or Genesis) This is the “best” route but not for everyone.
I get asked about my use of Triberr on a fairly regular basis and this is the first time I’ve shared the story behind my use of this tool. Is it right for you?… read more

Although the process seems kinda buggy, one of the MANY new changes the last week, has been that brand new pages can now get their vanity url without waiting till they are at 25 fans.
This means as soon as you set up your new page you can go get a custom facebook url.
If you’ve had a page hanging around without enough fans to get your custom url, try it now.
There does appear to be some bugs and it MAY only work if the page is brand new or has done a first couple setup steps. Its unclear if there is a time cutoff or not.
Enjoy your fancy new URLs!
(PS: Remember to think carefully, they are never changeable)
We *THINK* the fact that non-fans can currently write on Facebook Fan Page walls is likely a bug. However, there could be reasons it might be intentional and it’s hard to say.
I’m treating it as a bug. If you’re seeing an increase in spam on your page this is why.
Always remember to check your “Hidden Posts” (spam filter) on your page a couple times a week minimum!
