Some Thoughts on Free vs GPL Software
I don’t want to go into that too much because it’s a long bitter saga that is emotional, heated, hard to know who’s right, and likely to end up in court.
What I do want to share however is why WordPress is not actually ‘free’… who the WordPresss community is (hint: you and me)… what roles we play in helping keep WordPresss moving forward… and give you some idea of what role paid additions (plugins/themes) to WordPresss may or may not in that big picture.
These are just some thoughts that I shared live on my Q&A call the other day.
I’m pretty darn passionate about all of the communities that I take part in. This situation pains me because there are no easy answers. ReadWriteWeb just picked up the big GPL debate story too.
The only clear answer is that we need to continue to actively support the Open Source (GPL) WordPress community with donations, assistance, code contributions, and other resources they need to keep moving WordPress forward. It really does take a village to raise good software!
It’s a pleasure to be part of the WordPress community with you!
