Business Success Roadtrip v1
Hour 6 – It Is Possible To Play It Too Safe…

DartsAs part of my major road trip to Savannah, GA Wordcamp and visiting with various friends and favorite places I documented my mindset and observations and how they relate to successful business development.

The visual/video of these came out poorly (what do you expect, its dark at night!) but I challenge you to just listen to what I’m saying. Be sure to check out the rest of the BSR series.

Just like a parent provides tough love to a child that is struggling with something they need to do, can do, should do and are capable of doing but find challenging emotionally and sometimes even physically… so to must we provide our own tough love to ourselves as our business grows. Just like those things that the child finds challenging but are in fact good for the child, many aspects of growing a business can be uncomfortable, frustrating, and difficult but necessary for our progress and success. We must find the careful balance between knowing when we really need small, calculated breathers and keeping our nose firmly to the grindstone least we slack off. Just like an errant child that will wander away from doing his math homework if not attended to… we often find ourselves wandering away from what we should be doing, and making an excuse to do anything BUT that! Tough love of yourself and your business is absolutely KEY to long term success!

You can find out more about my Business Success Roadtrip series as well as links to others in the series and eventually information on how to download the whole set as mp3s for your own listening over on the announcement page for the Business Success Roadtrip volume 1!

Love the message in this video. I know that I can certainly feel it if I have missed my exercise for the day or even missed time with my girls! For me its been so important to find this balance, at times hard especially when starting new ventures, but my mind and body just don’t stop :-)
How are things going with your exercise regime you were embarking on? Still enjoying the protein shakes? I need to get out walking more in the fresh air rather than relying on this treadmill…. argh!
thanks for the great reminder
cheers

The weight-loss/fitness gig is on hold due to being so sick for so long. I was borderline pneumonia which has now settled into being “only” bronchitis after several major prescription medications. I’m on like day 10 or 11 of being sick now, deep cough, lack of voice, sound like I got a frog in my throat, oh yeah all the fun stuff. I cant wait for this little bug to get gone!

Actually though, as much as I hate to admit it, I know that it was my immune system crashing under the stress of my marriage separation coupled with the 12-16hr days I’ve been doing for the last 9 months. I was doing okay until the stress level went up even higher and then it got the best of me. Even now while sick I’m still working my tail off which probably isn’t helping but I’ve got goals ya know?

Lets just say I’m still working on learning about balance! Fortunately though I’m looking forward to all of this paying off and getting to unwind somewhere on a warm sandy beach with a cold fruity drink served by a cute cabana boy! I think that counts as balance right? LOL!

Love ya girl!

Trying to stay on schedule is very difficult – I run a variety of sites, some bigger and some almost invisible. Sometimes it is the practically invisible ones that seem to eat up the most time. Plus I have offline jobs and a sick significant other amongst other responsibilities.

What seems to work is having a schedule but remaining flexible. If I schedule times for certain activities/work specific items/whatever and then it can’t happen for some reason instead of beating myself up I am learning to breathe. My sanity, the sanity of those I care about are more important than any work stuff. So with the schedule I have learned to prioritize – not just what is critical for work, but what is critical for my relationships, for myself and for the world (have to care about that too). And then dealing with that stuff first and letting all the other stuff go.

The other thing that is keeping me more on track is having someone specific to check-in with to say – is this working, is this what we want, are we on track. So a peer/friend/associate/partner for whatever project as opposed to trying to do things without that kind of support. It allows for course correction and seems to save a lot of time and aggravation in addition to helping with focus/accountability.

Rob it actually sounds like you’ve got “tough love” figured out! You understand the need to have a schedule, but to be forgiving with yourself. You understand the need to press forward but not to beat yourself up when it simply cant happen. I think your description here is absolutely awesome and that mindset is going to take you a long ways! Thanks so much for stopping in and sharing!

Proper schedule for me works best. It was really important to set your priorities and have some time to manage it well. Being overworked bring a lot of pressure. It was so important to balance your life between work goal and personal matters.

Good stuff Kim:

I guess it is just like Joe Schroeder says ‘Do we Love ourselves Long enough to do the do, or Not!?”…..This is tough at times when you do not have a boss you are accountable to. I have been back in serious Marketing for 6 years, & it has been only in the past 2 years that I have learned what you are speaking of. There is a difference between a ‘real & needed SHORT break’ & going WAY too far with a so called break & losing focus & Momentum…I think we BS ourselves & as you said Baby ourselves too much here(at least I have).
