There were some accounts hacked in 2010, but not too much I think. Hackers can not do anything to get your password till you click on their links. So it didn't work much. But social media became really powerful tool, and it continues to grow. More and more people are using it in their everyday life. As it was mentioned in this article, you have to interact if you want to sell your products. Facebook and twitter are great ways to build relationships, trust and the name for your business.

I think that in terms of long term success SEO and SMM are often "kissing cousins" in that one can lead to the other, and being strong in one can if handled right, lead to building success with the other. For me, I'm primarily SMM with only about 1 in 20 posts being wrote with any SEO relevance... yet, because of both my niche and because of my SM reputation, I run about 50% SERP traffic which is pretty nice. They create a nice balance and help to strengthen the weaknesses in the other.

i have seen social media work for a lot of people, so much that they can even do with out the search engine traffic! helps in branding and trust building and unlike search engine traffic that is volatile and short lived , this kind of traffic stays and makes contributions to the blog/site in the long run

[...] Social Media (SM) is any platform (although generally only online or digital platforms use this term) that brings together individual members or visitors in a way that inspires them to interact, share content or generate content. Blogging with comments or forums enabled is considered a social media as it is a online platform for connectivity and sharing. Traditional websites that lacked any ability for visitors to interact with each other (rather than just with the site owner) are not considered a social media. The content involved can be words (forums), video (Youtube), pictures (Flickr) or really just about anything. The key is that it facilitates visitor interaction with each other. [...]

Hi Kim Nice work - many people need to have their hand held - until they see how easy it is.

I just published a post on my blog 15 minutes ago that would compliment this piece nicely.
