Friday marked the eight birthday of the WordPress platform that we have come to know, love and depend on in modern marketing!
Accounting for as much as FOURTEEN percent of the web it has seriously encroached on traditional static-html based site development with its ease of use, flexibility and power.
Joel’s article “WordPress: The Free Software With a Big Economy & How You Can Get Involved” tells us a lot about where WordPress came from and how this free software is having powerful effects on the economy (and how you can get a slice of the pie!)
In the WordPress development blog, Matt Mullenweg, first announced that version 0.7 was available, on May 27th, 2003. Thus setting history in motion.
As part of their eighth year celebration, the development community around WordPress is celebrating by focusing on giving some TLC to the WordPress codex, the documentation that we depend on to know what’s going on under the hood in WordPress.
While you may not feel competent enough to assist with the codex, there are two great ways that you can give back to the wordpress community.
The first is by (following the link above) submitting tutorials, trainings and how-to’s to the resource section for others users to enjoy. If you’ve been blogging a while, the chance is you have a couple of these around just needing slightly cleaned up to be ready to share the love!
The second is by going to the WordPress repository and logging in, and searching for all of the plugins that you are actively running, and marking them as WORKING on your current version of WordPress. (Also identify any you know of that don’t work any time you encounter them!) It’s important to the community that we focus on this yes/no exam after each major update and with WordPress version 3.2 on the near horizon there are a lot of plugins needing a good examination that YOU can help with. It’s as clicking the “Works” button for each plugin and then you can smile and know that you helped serve the community!
Lets take a few minutes to serve the awesome community that WE are a part of and which grows through OUR actions! Happy Birthday WordPress!
