Affiliate Redirection Tool
GoCodes: An incredibly simple way to make clean redirect URLs from your ugly affiliate links
This is a perfect, easy to use solution for someone that only has a handful of affiliate links to manage.
GoCodes is available in the wordpress plugin search, so its a simple matter to search, install and activate it.
It only has two simple settings (under Dashboard -> Settings ->GoCodes). The first allows you to specify the redirection path, which by default is yoururl.com/go/… but I found I prefer as yoururl.com/recommends/… even though its a bit longer. (Note the directions to not put the slashes in when you type the new word) The second setting is a checkbox to make the links nofollow, which I would suggest for SEO reasons, so you are not sharing SEO Link Juice with what is usually sales pages. (I should note that this program DOES correctly use 301 redirects for its links.)
Now, the REST of the configuration is done under Dashboard -> Tools -> GoCodes. The first thing you’ll immediately notice is there’s not much to set up! It doesn’t get much more simple, lightweight or straightforward than this little program.
If I want to create a redirect for my unsightly but highly loved Thesis theme link, here’s what I fill in.
Redirection Key: Thesis
Target URL: http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?B=198392&U=404774&M=24570
Count Hits: Check the Yes Box
Add Redirect Button
That’s it, the link that looks like http://just-ask-kim.com/recommends/thesis is added to the Manage GoCodes section that is below those fields. Piece of cake!
This plugins simple design won’t give you or your blog a headache.
However, the downside is that GoCodes does not enable cloaking/masking to protect the link and there is no easy way to search for, group or otherwise manage a high number of affiliate links. Even from the time I was only a few months in, I rapidly had WAY too many links for this solution to be optimal. (Don’t worry, I’ve got more solutions coming later in this series!)
This is a 5 star plugin for blend of stability, necessity of feature-set, lightweight, useful even for non-affiliates.
However, I have replaced this plugin with a somewhat more advanced plugin that does multiple things, called PrettyLink.
