UpPrev & Wibiya
Recently I wrote about a nifty plugin that helps with reader retention (reducing bounce rate) called “UpPrev: NYTimes Style “Next Post” Animated Button“.
It creates the nifty little fly-in box that offfers you another post in the same category as the post you’re reading when you near the bottom of the present post.
One conflict I found was that it sat behind the wibiya toolbar (would be the same for other toolbars including Meebo toolbar) when using it in the footer.
You can either make a very easy to alter code-change or set it to display before comments.
However, I wasn’t super thrilled by placing it before the comments at a low resolution (though it does work and is simpler) as it can overlap the comments fields.
A really simple fix if you’re not scared of kicking the code, which will last until the plugin is updated, is to go into…
Dashboard -> Plugins -> Editor … Then select UpPrev in the dropdown box.
Then on the right hand side select “upprev-nytimes-style-next-post-jquery-animated-fly-in-button/upprev_flyout.css“
Now, editing that file, at the very top you see #upprev_box which is what we need to adjust and about four lines below it you see bottom:0px;
Carefully edit that line to read bottom:40px; and voila!, you’re done!
I like 40 as it sits about 5 pixels above the wibiya bar, but you may prefer them touching (use 35) or further separated (try 60). For toolbars other than wibiya a different number will likely need used.
Once you’ve changed that number, just click update file at the bottom and your finished (until you upgrade the plugin).
That’s it… one super simple change and you’re on your way again with compatibility between two awesome toys!
